I don't know, i assumed it was because it makes sense that they should be special, not physical because they have no fucking bodies.

No it's not, what makes you think that? Ghost has been infamous for the fact that it is a physical type, because every Ghost type pre-generation 4 had shitty Attack stats. Every ghost Type move at that time, like Shadow Ball, was physical, but because no Ghost type Pokemon had enough Attack to make it useful, Ghost types were basically useless.
