They'll both be fine. The Acer V3 has a power saving CPU that runs slower for basic tasks like Microsoft Office or web browsing, but kicks in when it needs to for games, videos, etc. This Lenovo always runs at higher speed. You'll get a much longer battery charge out of the Acer and it'll run cooler when under low stress. There's a technical difference in speed, but so small you will never be able to tell. It comes down to display vs graphics card.

The Acer indeed doesn't come with a DVD drive, but a laptop DVD drive (internal or external) can be bought for $20-$30(US). I've learned to get by without one by moving ripped copies via USB and running DaemonTools. With the big storage, I'm sure you could do the same.

Well if the gaming performance is mostly the same, the Acer seems to be the better fit. I rarely watch DVDs on my laptop anyway, so that's no big deal.
How well would the Acer be able to run games like Shadow of Mordor, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and games such as those with pretty high performance demands?
#18601 - quatre (10/14/2014) [-]
Also did some searching. The Acer is a 'slim' model and _can't__ hold a DVD drive. You'll have to go an external USB drive if you want one for it. It's the same price either way, but now you won't get stuck with a drive that won't fit.

The 840M was released in March. It's not the best laptop video card, but it is new and with 2GB should be able to run new games like Shadow of Mordor fine, especially if you're willing to run on less than the super-duper setting.

Really, this laptop may not be alienware, but you can rest assured you are getting a big bang for your buck.

Oh, and is this not the same laptop, but cheaper?

that one says unavailable for NZ. I don't know why, it may have to do with what warehouse it ships from.

Well Amazon is the cheapest I've found, still pricey, but not much you can do about that.
Thanks so much for all the advice, I would be utterly lost without it.

No problem, it broke up the monotony before I go to bed. Good luck with the new PC, it should be a real beauty when you get it.

I'm glad.
Just being about to play The Binding of Isaac lag free is going to be amazing, I'll finally be able to play the high end games in my Steam library.

Oh darn, on Newegg it costs about $130 for shipping, so I'm hoping to find the same laptop with cheaper or free shipping.
This seems to be the same laptop, and hopefully Amazon has cheaper shipping to NZ..

General Advice:
>Look for the latest generation processors, in intel the 4XXX line in the i3, i5, i7. The i5 is a good compromise of price, power, and performance.
>Look for DDR3 or DDR4 RAM, 4 to 8 gigs of it.
>Without buying individual parts, you probably wont know the hard drive speed, but look for at least 250gigs of storage, up to 1Tera. An SSD is nice, but adds price.
>Dedicated raphics cards aren't common in laptops, and you'll frequently pay a premium for them, but you're flexible on that. That's fine, because integrated graphics are doing fine, especially in the latest line recommended above.
>Have other qualtifications in mind. A DVD drive or slim profile?. Big screen or lighter weight? Full keyboard? Webcam?
> Newegg.com is the go-to place for tech deals. You can browse yourself, but here are some picks for your price range:

Big Screen+DVD drive: www.newegg.com/global/nz/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA0AJ21G6152
Dedicated Graphics Card, 1080p display: www.newegg.com/global/nz/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA0AJ1X40063
Windows 7, all-rounder: www.newegg.com/global/nz/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA0AJ1XU9110
Budget Bargain: www.newegg.com/global/nz/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA0AJ1V97328

That last one is what I currently use. It's too slim for a DVD drive, but if you can get past that, it's great. Integrated graphics will keep you satisfied and the power saving CPU lasts all day like none other. It's case is a little cheap and has some flex, but the hardware is satisfactory.

If I was in your shoes, go for the big screen or the graphics card build.

Thanks for the awesome advice, I've had a look at the reviews for the laptops, and the first and second seem great, not sure which one to choose though.
Probably the biggest factor is speed, whichever would go the faster and run recent games the best, which from what little I know would seem to be the Lenovo, but I'm not really sure.
Other than that they both seem to have everything else I'd want, decent storage, screen size, web-cam. I'm assuming the Acer V3 doesn't have a DVD drive? Since I don't see it mentioned.
