I like Star Trek TNG.
I don't like the original, I don't like Voyager, and odyssey was just like a bad fandiction and I couldn't deal with it even though the ship looked awesome.
Now, my favourite things about TNG are Captain Picard and Data.
Data because he's odd, but given the opportunity can make some kickass command decisions.
Captain Picard because he's everything I'd like to be.
He has had a wild past but he's matured into a fiercely intelligent individual with a trong moral compass who commands resepct, not just as a captain, but as a skilled diplomat and a general awesome dude, even if he has a few foibles such as an unwillingness for public displays of initimacy, moral to a fault, and not good with children or overbearing persons. All this whilst remaining a proud Frenchman who still respects his roots and the traditions and history of not only his own country, but of many counties and cultures. Even cultures of other planets that are both present, and long ancient.

That's how Picard was written. Apart from a few moments, all of what you see of Captain Picard, is Captain motherfucking Jean Luc Picard.
Imagine this re-make they're going on about.
Captain John Luke Picard (pronounce Pick-rd)of some town in the suburbs of California boards his Milky Way Class star-ship in the Apple iDock and takes command of his crew of 1000 beings that are each individual and from a different culture and race.
The first 5 episodes are the American captain touring the decks twiddling his american football and listening to each of the 1000 crew members introduce themselves and explain their culture and why it should be appreciated.
John agrees and jews his gum whilst he listens.
He tells each person to "call me Johnny". Then goes to the bridge, cracks a fresh gluten free bud and orders the crew to microtransact their way out of the iDock and out into space as they have an intergalactic feminist cuddle convention to attend, and attendance for all beings in the galaxy is mandatory.

You see, it just destroys the character and the setting completely.
Another example would be suddenly inserting a Woman doctor who in between the 3rd and the 4th.
It's just not the character.
The doctor has always been described as an eccentric man.
This is why I don't agree with Idris Elba playing Bond.
The character is just not that.
James Bond is a public school Naval officer who got a job with military intelligence and is one of the most prolific womanisers since ghengis khan.

You can't just change the character that's been described as something. It just ruins the vision and the character itself.

What's that? Russia set an off planet driving record with a lunar rover that looked like a bathtub, that still stands to this day, before we ever even orbited the moon? That's just insane. Wait, what's that? They also landed probes on Venus and Mars? Well that's just insane

I think first person in space, first extraplanetary probes, first lunar rover, AND first mars landing before we even reached the moon wins the space race, bub.

Do you know why we stopped going to the moon? It was too expensive. The russians saw that, and figured "eh, we've done enough, let's stop throwing money at it". While we're on the subject, historically speaking, you do realize the whole point behind the Apollo program was to show off superior rocket technology in the world's biggest dick measuring contest, right? We didn't even send scientists teoil the last mission, the whole point was to show we could build rockets that could deliver a heavy payload literally anywhere. Get over it, we aren't in the space race any more, and considering Russia set about 90% of the firsts in space exploration, I think it's safe to say we didn't exactly win. First humans on the moon, vs first everything else. Figure it out. I don't give a shit anyways, nationalism is a stain on our existence when you consider we're squabbling over pebbles, when we can't even measure the true size of the universe around us. Just remember, borders are invisible from space

Still ignoring the fact that nationalism is really quite meaningless, I see. We shouldn't be trying to do this just for the good of one country, we need to explore for the good of all humanity

Ignoring the fact that global cooperation in space exploration actually brings countries together towards a common goal, and played a part in ending the cold war. But yeah, keep telling yourself that America alone reigns supreme over all other nations, it's that kind of thinking that starts wars in the first place

To emphasize what I said earlier, joint scientific exploration has a way of bringing together the most unlikely of groups. Look at the US and Russia. Until Putin took power, we actually had a pretty good relationship going on after we started doing joint space missions together. And just because some countries have extremist groups doesn't mean those group[s represent the majority of that country. Most of the human race still wants to live together without conflict.

So you're saying only the countries you feel deserve to survive should have the means to explore? that's eugenics on a global scale

We're one fucking species, dude, people can get over their differences, it happens constantly worldwide. This is why nationalism is a stain on the human race, people somehow get this fucked concept that they're better than others just because they have a better situation. It doesn't work like that. You don't have some inherent right to do better than others just because you were born in a country that didn't even exist until 1776

And that's why we don't let terrorists on spaceships. But you don't get to say one specific country gets to hold a monopoly on scientific exploration that benefits the entire human race, nobody has that right

On a side note, deep space exploration is too damn expensive for just one group or another to accomplish, we need global cooperation if we can hope to survive. Nationalism is not sustainable in scientific exploration, all it takes is one look at the world from orbit to put all that aside in a heartbeat. Pretty much every astronaut since the first soviet missions has said this after returning

And now we're back on this. You don't get to say who lives or dies, you're not the appointed judge of all humanity

Ok, so now we're getting out of third world countries, and telling people in our own damn country they don't deserve to live. Not much better of an argument, buddy. Mainly because it ignores the fact that most of the people living off government assistance have no say over their situation. Are you seriously going to tell me someone who literally can't change their situation deserves to die because of it?

Ignoring, of course, the fact that your arguments have almost entirely been about preventing third world countries from being part of the international scientific community, based solely on geographical point of origin. Again, racist as shit

And every African uis a warlord waiting to happen, so they don't deserve to be part of it? Now we're getting out of nationalism and straight into racism

This isn't about survival, though, this is about pure scientific exploration that benefits all mankind. Besides which, you don't get to say someone else is less deserving of survival just because they were born in a shittier situation than you. If you think being born in a better situation makes you inherently more worthy of survival, you're what the human race is moving away from in the first place.

More than half the continent is covered in desert. What isn't is covered by dense rainforest, there's not much land for cultivation left out of all that. And what does grow, is almost instantly shipped out across the world to other countries, there's more than just shiny rocks coming out of Africa. They just live the way they have for thousands of years, because it's all they can afford. And we pay them next to nothing for labor, mines are basically almost slave camps these days.and that's not their doing, the mines and farms are owned by international corporations that leave almost nothing behind when they take the product.

So it's not the fault of the international banking system that drags third world countries deeper into debt whenever they have to get help from the international community? It's not because 90% of food crops grown in these countries get shipped across the world, leaving almost nothing for the native inhabitants, or the fact that the system is rigged to pull as many resources as possible from a region, while paying out as little as possible? Nah, it's the fault of the people living in countries that already barely have the natural resources to feed their own people, while getting robbed by exporters that pay next to nothing because it's cheap labor. This isn't their fault, the rest of the world is robbing these people blind at times. How can you say you deserve survival more than they, when they have no say whatsoever in their situation?
