 That's why I don't think hover cars will ever be a mainstream thing. Assuming they use strong magnets. #84 -
anon (09/13/2015) [-] if hover cars used magnets they had to change entire roads to make it magnetic with the cars, then travelling would be limited to magnetic roads only. which sucks  mm not necessarily. with a strong enough magnet you could just float off of the earth itself. I mean, you're guessing a part of a non discovered high tech, you sure you should be doing that?  Well, they probably wouldn't use magnets, but even if they did you could switch out conventional memory with solid state memory, and that would take care of the data loss problem. Though Hover cars would probably not use magnets to suspend themselves. There are models now that use a cushion of air to float around on, but the process wastes a lot more energy than just driving a regular car. It's too expensive to drive a hover craft.  ...and the earth's natural magnetic field and we all gonna die yeah  Credit cards aren't actually all that susceptible to magnets..  Actually, yeah they are. Get any decent magnet and swipe the card on it and you will ruin the card. #91 -

I don't work around magnets, but I am in no way careful how I handle them when I do, and they have passed my card several times. Before I heard that credit cards could be messed up with magnets I made a money clip out of magnets I harvested from a couple hard drives and my card still works just fine. It would take a stupidly strong magnet to screw up a card. Not any decent magnet..if you were looking to buy one powerful enough it would cost ~$3000. I did it in uni man, we worked our way through different magnets until the one that actually worked was stupidly strong and expensive..so not just any decent magnet. Swipe the card through the magnet lock on a fridge. Card will be borderline useless. Every website that as a topic about this says any decent magnet will erase some data on the card.
