I think our schools allow us to learn independent thought and applicable skills, but ultimately it's the culture that encourages us to do it. We're constantly told how important education is and that we are a society built around being smarter than other societies, since we can't sell cheap labor. The general culture in my classroom was that the people who were known as "nerds" in elementary were the "cool kids". The smart guys were generally more popular than the less smart guys. I also believe the genders were completely equal there. Everybody worked together pretty much flawlessly (except for one guy, couldn't stand him. But it's hard to avoid that), and everyone pulled their weight as best they could. Everybody WANTED to be useful to the group, and everybody made sure they performed the best they could. We didn't want to let our teammates down with a sub-par performance, as they would get disappointed.
It was great. We collectively pushed each other as hard as we could take. But if you have problems at home, that was respected and took priority over school stuff.
We were also allowed to do all sorts of shit that my brothers aren't allowed in class. We could use cell phones if we wanted (one guy used it instead of a laptop) and one teacher even said that we were free to use facebook as much as we wanted, he didn't want to fight it. We were free to be on facebook in all classes, especially since we used it for sharing files with each other. It was just much easier that way.

Our schools don't encourage anything like that. We're encouraged to be good little children who do what we're told. Unless it was an AP class, we were rarely graded on the actual quality of our work. Our society is very far down the drain, we're the ones raising feminazis, ignorant stereotypes, and generally unhelpful people. We have the tools, but we don't apply them in the right places.
