If your DM argues with you, give him this example:

The DC of a running long jump is 1 per foot, therefore the DC of jumping a 500ft wide canyon is 500. Now, for nigh on all creatures PCs can play without using homebrew that jump is impossible.... Except a nat 20. By that logic you have a constant 5% chance to jump 500ft horizontal, or 1000ft, or 10'000ft. Now doesn't that sound fucking stupid?

you can say the opposite that you have a constant 5% chance to fail jumping over a 1 foot wide hole, which is also stupid.
User avatar #33 - bendeman (10/27/2014) [-]
You could argue that a nat 1 would be tripping on the jump and taking damage, while still making it over. You still make it across, but you also fail.
#41 - phonicghost (10/27/2014) [-]
But from a purely mechanical standpoint you succeed in your task, i.e. making it over.

In my mind the rule of cool prevails, and having my lvl 16 Fighter with enchanted weapons and armor coming out the wazoo with enough damage from one hit to kill most men and acrobatics skill enough to give Ezio a run for his money, but also a constant 5% to trip on a 1ft hole? My 4 year old cousin could make that easy :') 5% is just too damn high.

Rules should be interpreted with common sense, and that doesn't make a lot of sense

#19 - phonicghost (10/27/2014) [-]
Stealth is an opposed check, so it really depends on what the other guy rolls on Perception

On any attack roll a nat 1 misses. If a gun has a misfire of 3, then it misses on 1, 2 and 3 and gains the broken condition, which increases its misfire. If a gun has a misfire of 1, and gains the reliable quality its misfire is reduced to 0 and effectively does not misfire. However, nat 1's still miss.
User avatar #20 - TheMather (10/27/2014) [-]
We're still lvl 1, so I'm counting on most opposed perception checks to be reliably low.

And thanks.

It does not work that way in pathfinder either, your DM either doesn't know the rules or is making his own homebrew. The second is fine, the first is evidence that he shouldn't be a DM
User avatar #55 - psykobear (10/28/2014) [-]
Are you retarded, or have you never played DnD?
The first rule of the books is that these are not rules, but guidelines. DM is law, as it should be.
Many rules in the book are against fun, and we are playing to have fun.
#15 - phonicghost (10/27/2014) [-]
I think you've misunderstood the rules then, since in PF auto success on nat 20's is only for attacks and saving throws, same as auto fail on nat 1's. For skills and ability checks, if you have +5 and the DC is 26, you literally cannot succeed, even with a nat 20.

The reverse of that is that when you get +9 in a skill it means you auto succeed anything of DC 10 or lower, cos you're just that damn good at it. At +14 you auto succeed on DC 15 and so on.

It represents that some things become trivial to really skilled people, and some things are out of they're capabilities.
User avatar #56 - psykobear (10/28/2014) [-]
Well, the point of the game is fun, and if everyone has more fun when they can crit success or crit fail a skill role, it's the DM's job to make sure it is fun for the players and do that.
#57 - phonicghost (10/29/2014) [-]
Of course, however the skill and DC system is set up with the above in mind. See comment #21.

I'd like to think that if you could have passed with a nat 20 or less, then getting a nat 20 could cause some fun things to happen
User avatar #58 - psykobear (10/29/2014) [-]
There are limits. A Nat 20 could make you do jumps that you could never do before, but a good DM would realize that 500ft would be too much. Now, let's say there is a 40 foot gap. The DC would be 40. A player has a Jump of +11, making the most they could get a 31. If they rolled a 20, I would allow it as a success, because it's not an extreme success.

Crit success doesn't mean total desctruction. Even in combat, it's just double or triple damage. So, with skills, while it wouldn't mean always success, I would allow it to accomplish feats that would normally be outside of your expertise, but doable.

You're arguing no change, while the others are arguing complete change (500ft jumps, for example) and I'm saying there is a middle ground.
#62 - phonicghost (10/29/2014) [-]
Accidentally replied to myself instead of you see #61
#59 - phonicghost (10/29/2014) [-]
I'm arguing what the rules say, what the DM's decide to do is their own thing
#61 - phonicghost (10/29/2014) [-]
Core Rulebook, just to be pedantic

Of course they can be used as guidelines, which my friend who is a very fluff driven DM would, whereas my other friend runs it as strict rules where a rule is used verbatim if one is available, so he's very crunch oriented.
Both approaches are perfectly valid and I'm actually somewhere in the middle, I was simply informing TheMather of the crunch version, if his DM decides to continue the way he does it now that's fine, but if his DM wanted to follow the rules closely then that's how he would do so
User avatar #60 - psykobear (10/29/2014) [-]
Well, they're not rules, really, is the point, but guidelines to help the DM make rules. Some DMs just say that they are the rules, and that's fine. Some of them are rediculous, though. For example, the feat "Cleave" is overpowered and doesn't make sense. A new attack roll? It's the same swing, just going through multiple targets.
User avatar #16 - TheMather (10/27/2014) [-]
I should really keep that in mind then, because I've got +14 to stealth and I've been afraid of nat 1's screwing me over.

By the way, do you know if regular nat 1's apply to firearms? Usually on a nat 1, they just misfire, but there are ways to prevent that, so if you get a nat 1 with a firearm with the Reliable enhancement, but you have enough attack bonus to overcome the AC, do you miss?
#29 - brainy (10/27/2014) [-]

User avatar #74 to #73 - yibdiy (09/14/2014) [-]
Oh, and why me then?
I mean, I hate tsundere, I didn't enjoy your favorite anime much and I'm not really a fan of romcoms. We have pretty different tastes, I'd say.
One thing we most certainly do share, though, is liking Misaka.
User avatar #75 to #74 - TheMather ONLINE (09/14/2014) [-]
It's not like Shana clones and romcoms are all I like. I prefer tomboys over Shana clones and romance-heavy action stories over romcoms.
Misaka is my overall favorite character in any medium, and unlike so many of the others who like her you don't just dismiss Index as inferior to Railgun. And to rationally be able to explain the things you don't like about it, of course that makes you a swell dude in my book.

Also your contribution to the recommendation board. The fact that you're willing to help other people like that is just awesome.
User avatar #76 to #75 - yibdiy (09/14/2014) [-]
I see
Thanks, man. It's probably because I like having discussions and you are great for this, I like talking to you. You aren't self-entitled elitist little **** and behave like a well-behaved person, I like that aspect of you very much. Something I thought was going to happen on /anime/... I thought wrong (for the most part, anyway).

Well, I remember how clueless I was back then when I started, so I'd like to help others to get into the hobby that I enjoy so much and is quite a big part of my life now.

Oh boy, that sounds so gay, but you understand, right?

Also saten added me to friends, so I can now go to Shin, great. Too bad I'll just lurk a lot to learn how things work over there before actually posting anything.
User avatar #77 to #76 - TheMather ONLINE (09/14/2014) [-]
Thanks. I often worry that how stubborn I am with my opinions makes me sound like a douche in prolonged discussions, so hearing you say that really means a lot to me.

And I decided to make the rec board for a similar reason. I quickly gained momentum when I started out, thanks to two of the guys I hang out with every day for the first year having years of experience watching anime, but as I ran out of obvious stuff to watch, I became more and more reliant on /anime/ for finding new ones. So last summer while the rec threads were rolling in like crazy, and due to the large disparity between people that were trying to help them out and people that were just bitching about it, I used that as an excuse to make a place where people that are having trouble finding stuff, like I was, could get help.
User avatar #78 to #77 - yibdiy (09/14/2014) [-]
Nah, you are completely fine, you just stand by your convictions and opinions but without being an asshole about it and with rational explanations.

Yeah, it's great place for people to get recs from those, who are well-versed (unlike most of the internet) in anime/manga without being shat on (like they would be on /anime/ or /a/). It's also good when you'd like to watch/read something specific.

Woo. I am the most informed!

Anyways, it's romaji, not romanji.
Also didn't know asking for source/opinions was frowned on, and you might want to add "outside of the dedicated recommendation board" to the part about requests.

Updated what you commented on. Should I add some notes on VNs, or not bother? Also, trying to decide what format I want to put this in. Structure it as an image, make it a post, I don't know. Thoughts?

Hi there.

Holy crap did I truly find someone who knew hansjsand?
User avatar #25 to #24 - TheMather ONLINE (12/18/2013) [-]
Yo.

I don't know him per se, but we've talked before and gotten along.
User avatar #26 to #25 - flybager (12/18/2013) [-]
How're things?

He was the first person I met and became friends with on funnyjunk, and one of my best friends here.

'bout a year ago he finished college and went to work, and nowadays doesn't come on funnyjunk anymore at all due to no time.
Last time he was to be considered 'active' was back when the pony-fandom first erupted here, on funnyjunk. (to give you a refference)
Assuming you remember that

I'm just glad to have found a trace of him on funnyjunk itself.

User avatar #22 to #21 - TheMather ONLINE (11/23/2013) [-]
Good, but it'd be hard for it to treat me badly since I started it with vodka.

You?

Well I posted it.

I hope you realize what is most likely going to happen is that we'll get a BUNCH of people going to the anime board with ******** rec thread requests. That or it will just get thumbed down. Either way, I lose something. Enjoy the rest of your day friend.

So I finally started making the post.

I'm just doing something simple, basically just a text post. Anything you want me to say, I'm not very literate when it comes to these things. I figured I would just say something along the lines of this...

"To the users of FJ
The /anime/ board community has made a "Recommendations Board" for any to visit where they can ask for what ever type of anime they want. We have many images and links already up that would take days to complete, and you can create threads if you wish for a specific anime. Many of the /anime/ regulars are posting there and keeping an eye on the board so you will get the replies you wish for. If anyone has posted a rec thread before on the /anime/ board, do you recall the crappy anime, shota, and hate you received for doing so? With the creation of the Rec Thread we ask you to please stop coming to the /anime/ board asking for recommendations, we receive multiple of these threads a day and would like them to stop."

I didn't spend much time on it so if you want me to add anything I don't mind.

Sounds perfect to me.
User avatar #16 to #15 - anonymousbrony (08/14/2013) [-]
Well, I'll put the text in the image.

I'm going to see if the anime board likes it or not.
I just hope it's not so bad I get banned.
User avatar #14 to #13 - anonymousbrony (08/14/2013) [-]
Well, it's going to be an image though.

I don't think I'll trust someone who lacks the ability to follow even a single gramatical or conversational rule to judge the correctness of any statement I've made.
And by the way, you're a coward.

You yet again fail to convince me you've got an IQ above even a single multiple of ten. Especially because you apparently fail to realize that posting on a profile means you can be IP blocked, which you just were.

You wouldn't happen to play RuneScape, would you?
User avatar #4 to #3 - TheMather ONLINE (05/06/2013) [-]
I do.
I'm guessing you maybe recognize my name from a clan event that took place yesterday?
User avatar #5 to #4 - lawuser (05/06/2013) [-]
Not exactly, I was just there sometime last week and I recognixed your name is all. I asked if it was you but you never answered.
User avatar #6 to #5 - TheMather ONLINE (05/06/2013) [-]
Must've been a really bad timing. I usually respond when people talk to me, and if you mentioned my name that should have caught my attention right away.
What's your username? Mine's The Mather1 as you know.
User avatar #7 to #6 - lawuser (05/06/2013) [-]
The Lawuser. I joined the clan some weeks ago although I mostly play 07 at the time being.
User avatar #8 to #7 - TheMather ONLINE (05/06/2013) [-]
I only joined about 5 weeks ago myself. I play the current version but I'm not really progressing that fast since I can't bear to grind. I've had the account since 2006, but I've only got a total level of 1666.
