"It becomes a tax write off for the hospital under the laws"
Yeah, only in the sense that they don't get taxed on $9000 that they didn't receive. It would be ridiculous to tax them on money they never receive.
The price hospitals and practices charge is pretty much meaningless. Insurance and the government will pay the lesser of whatever they pay or whatever is charged. For hospitals and practices to get the maximum amount for their services they simply need to charge above what anyone would ever pay. That's where ridiculous "prices" come from.
The system such as it is screws people who are honest and dumb enough to pay cash amounts that insurance and the government would NEVER pay.
What would be nice is if the law required hospitals and practices to charge the lowest amount for cash payments. Then what you'd find is a lot of people don't really need insurance (at least not for most stuff).
The health insurance companies and the government are pretty much the bad guys. They pushed everything onto hospital and practices. The way it should be, is that hospitals and practices set their own prices, and the government and insurance companies send their customers where they can get the best deal. Instead it's backwards, and that fault lies with the health insurance companies and government.
This is entirely because of the third party payer system in the US. If hospitals had to show their prices beforehand like everyone else, they'd be much better about it.
You can find out prices but its a condiluted nightmare. You can call your practioner/whoevers gonna do the procedure and ask them what billing codes they're gonna bill you for. You take those codes to the hospital billing department and theyll tell you how much they charge for those specific codes. You can then call the insurance company, give them those codes, they'll have their biling department check the codes to see if the contracted amount is less than the billed amount that the hospital is gonna charge you. Note if the doctor does something else or bills different codes then the work you did is meaningless. Everytime I had to check for a customer what the contracted amount for certain codes were I had to tell them to be 100% sure thats what their doctor was gonna bill them for and just those codes/nothing else so they wouldnt call me back bitching about how they were billed more than what i told them. Most of the time it was cause they decided to talk to their doctor about some random shit during their preventative care visit which was 100% covered under ACA so the doctor billed them for an office visit on top of the preventative care appointment. so they had to pay an office visit copay or whatever their benefits were
Alot of places do show prices before hand. The problem is BIG hospitals especially in urban areas do not, and they control the game.
