The way I see soldiers now, is that they're just doing their job. Being in the military gives decent pay, and helps a lot of people pay for university. It's a job like any other. I don't see why in America, we make such a weird big deal out of honoring soldiers. Very few of them are actually in the military for moral reasons.
Also, our freedom isn't at risk in the wars we're fighting right now, so it bothers me when people say to thank the soldiers for our liberty.
There are lots of people who sacrifice themselves to try to help others. The military has a focus on war and killing, to oversimplify. I prefer to honor people who go into impoverished regions and build schools and provide medical care. That feels more to me a selfless profession.

Personally, I'm joining the Army soon. Not for the money, or the benefits, though those do help, but for the chance to serve my country. In my opinion, as one of the few of my generation who is healthy, in good shape, and smart, it's kind of my duty to serve. I think it's something everybody should at least be willing to do during a draft. People evading it as much as possible are an embarrassment to me.

But I plan on becoming either a pilot, or a medic, or maybe even a Ranger if I can qualify. I then want to use the skills I learn to help in war-torn and disaster-stricken regions of the world.

But, you are right for saying not everybody joins for the right reasons, but either way, it's still a hard choice, and it's still dangerous, and they still end up fighting in the service of our country. And regardless, they at least deserve thanks instead of hatred. That's just my view on it. I'm glad you're not against soldiers though, but still realize that many join for personal benefits.
