basically there are a bunch of "SCP"s that users create with certain numbers (including infamous ones like 173), and people in the community rate them down or up depending on how good they are. The good ones stay, the bad ones are typically revised or simply bite the dust.

In terms of canon there is a canon page on the wiki but I haven't read it yet , there is crazy, fucked up shit on the loose, everywhere. Whether inanimate or animate, harmful (keter), potentially (euclid), or not (safe), etc., these anomalous people/things are huddled up into SCP facilities where trained staff members keep the entire site on lockdown to prevent their escape. Whether catering to whatever the SCP needs, or keeping them happy, or ignoring them, or straight up attacking them to try to get them to fuck off and leave everyone alone, the SCPs are secured and contained, meaning the rest of the world can remain protected (Thus SCP).

SCP: Containment Breach is a game that I believe is still in development, has been for many years now, in which the aforementioned SCP 173 breaks out of its holding cell, as well as many other SCPs, as the power to the facility goes out. You, a D class personnel, wander around the facility in the dark with all of this fucked up shit loose and out to kill you, with the goal being to escape and live. Spoiler: You die even if you win.
