Thor is exactly the same as Superman. Like they are the DC and Marvel counterparts of eachother. You can't look at the movie version of Thor because it doesn't do his comic any justice. The only difference between Superman and Thor is Superman has more powers and Superman gets his power from the sun. Having said that if Thor and Superman were to take their battle to Asgard Superman wouldn't stand a chance. They are both nearly invincible. Superman's death isn't inevitable its just hard. Where Thor's death is impossible.

As someone who hasn't read the comics and only watched his movies and the Justice League, so compared to other people get I have very little idea over what we're talking about, he's way over powered. Superman would be fine if he was in his own universe without different heros, but people insist on having them all form a team in a cross over, so when compared to nearly every other superheroes he basically has their power and a hundred other.

He's basically the cheat code to everything. If he fought anyone/anything he could just shoot them with his laser eyes and they would die.

No one is really hating on Superman himself but just the movie interpretation of him. actually since the movie came out, people have been defending superman more so then I've seen in a long time. And considering my loathing of the current comics and how well Man of steel was received by some people, that's a plus in my book since Superman is my third favorite superhero. (Behind Batman and Spider-man)

But the reason people hate on Superman most of the time is because of his lack of reliability from the surface. If you are just a regular person who doesn't follow the comics, it's easy to see Superman as an all powerful deity that has every single power imaginable and that can't be beaten (which is true some most cases in the comics). I think that's the main reason why people hate on Superman because at the surface, he's not all the relatable because he's seen as an all-powerful superhero in tights that stands for the typical "truth, justice, and the american way". But if you read the most well written Superman comics, he is probably one of the most relatable and vulnerable superheroes out there. He's an lone alien on a strange planet with more humanity and kindness and self-doubt in his heart then a lot of others superhero. That's really what makes him Superman. And that why people got so pissed at Man of Steel because they felt that humanity was stripped away from him, resulting in the destruction that was metropolis at the end of the movie. But I think that's at the surface as well because i saw a lot of what Superman was in that movie, I just think they kind of dropped the ball during the final act but it won me back when superman snapped Zod's neck and then broke down immediately afterwards. Because the movie still gave that message that Superman incarnations should always give. That despite his incredible power, he is still most human and vulnerable superhero of them all.

TLR never judge a book by it's cover

I find Superman to be legitimately overpowered, he has almost every fucking power you can think of (flight, super strength, super speed, fucking LASER EYES, etc.), and asides from kryptonite, he has no actual weaknesses. I haven't seen the newest movie, but every other Superman movie was the same exact fucking thing: Superman flies around, stops criminals, saves lives, never gets hurt, etc. and then near the end there's always that one fucking guy who shows up with a shard of kryponite, incapacitates superman (Who's then forced to fight the guy as an equal), despite all odds Superman wins, but bad guy gets away, world is saved, blah blah blah, every single fucking time.

Martian Manhunter is more overpowered than Superman. And he has villains that can put up a decent fight, like General Zod, Darkseid, Doomsday, Bizzaro, Cyborg-Superman, Metallo and Parasite. Guys like Luthor and Braniac can outsmart him
User avatar
#206 - Sanguinarian (09/15/2013) [-]
I am one to admit Superman is overpowered, more so that Martian Manhunter, MM just doesn't seem too overpowered to me. But what else do you expect of a character who is written to be perfect, so that instead of a Batman/Goku type thing where they push PHYSICAL limits, his are about emotional and mental limits. Like learning to control himself not to break people or things and dealing with not being able to get angry or anything be cause he might lose that control if he loses control of his emotions also. Also, he is literally the first Superhero ever, they had to restart a billion times because hey increased his already impossibly powerful powers, but that's because he's been around since Action Comics #1. But just because someone does not understand the character, does not mean they are allowed to hate him.
#51 - anon (09/13/2013) [-]
He tends to have the personality of a walnut in most film depictions, especially in Man of Steel and his power is far too limitless for you to really feel like any victories are triumphant.

Often times, comic books are not about whether the Superhero lives or dies, but rather how the choices they make affect their own lives or the universe at large.

Those people who watch the Superman movies quite literally get the bare minimum of the character. He's meant to be the ubermensch, not our every-day human.

But the CONSEQUENCES of his actions as the ubermensch surrounded by the 'normal people' are what make him a compelling character. I mean really, the Flash and Martian Manhunter also have ridiculously strong powers(have you ever seen SUPERMAN break the time barrier in the comic books?), so it can't be that.

I've had this conversation time and again with people, and they always seem to have trouble with there being no real dramatic tension in his movies(and only the movies, none of them seem to know anything about the comic book runs). However, these same people are usually the ones who think Batman is a badass, despite the sheer implausibility of things in the plots of his movies that give him the edge, such as him returning to Gotham within Bane's time limit from the point that he escaped the prison(something I am more or less certain would be impossible, with him not having the resources or money to make a trip back to Gotham by jet, even IF the whole city wasn't locked down) or surviving the fallout of a fucking nuke. If anything, half of the time Batman seems to be wearing just as much plot-armour as Superman, so those people need to slapped.

All in all, Superman is hated because he is literally MADE of the stuff EVERY OTHER MAJOR SUPERHERO HAS, people just don't like fucking knowing it.

P.S. Batman was time-travelling and was replaced by a clone the WHOOOOOLE time! That's not a fucking cop-out after his 'death'!

I don't hate superman, I just don't usually find him as interesting as other characters. I used to like superman a lot more when I was a little younger, but I guess I got kind of tired of him over time. This could just be because I tend to like marvel characters more though. I feel like DC heros overall is a little too overpowered and far fetched for my tastes, but I still enjoy them most of the time.

I think the biggest difference between Marvel and DC for me is that Marvel tends to look at Superheroes if they lived in a world that DIDN'T like them.
DC tends to be the other way round, mostly. Characters like the Flash and Superman inspire me, as it's how I'd like to see myself acting if I was a superhero.

when it comes to the has every power aspect, that's done on purpose, a what if there was a perfect super hero, not every character needs to have flaws, not ever superhero should be limited to only a handful of powers. Superman is that superhero unfortunately now for that niche market who LOVE the unstoppable, invincible, lovable, good role model, boy scout, super hero! I don't like Superman movies tbh, I only loved his cartoon shows.

There is a famous quote from the new 52 write of Superman that is something along the lines that although Superman is invincible, he still faces all the problems human face because he is new to humanity. A great example is issue one of the new 52 of Superman when he is friendzoned by Louis Lane.

b. he has the worst/easiest-to-kidnap girlfriend in the world

c. He got beat in The Dark Knight Returns because Supes was going easy on him because he knew Bruce was right, but The Gipper forced him to fight him. Bruce also needed Green Arrow's help
d. You don't need fucking stealth when you have fucking super strength, man

Forgot to mention the Superman villains. Most of them like General Zod, Darkseid, Doomsday, Cyborg Superman, Metallo, Parasite and Bizarro are able to compete on a physical level, and beat the shit out of Superman given the right moment. Guys like Lex Luthor and Braniac are able to outsmart Superman. That's just one of the ways they compensate for the 'He's is too overpowered!' argument.
#76 - anon (09/13/2013) [-]
As far as the new movie goes, it was hilariously bad. Prime example...

Semi-spoilers (not really anything you can't guess from trailers) ahead:
The bad guys want to re-create krypton on earth. So of course, there has to be the part where the bad guy explains the evil plan. Superman asks, "What about the humans?" Since its through a psychic/dream sequence, when the bad guy says that a foundation must be laid (implying humans are killed) superman looks down at the ground/foundation and he's standing on a ton of skulls. He, of course, refuses to join the bad guy... "Then you will join them," and superman, the guy who can fly, is helpless as he sinks into the skulls like quicksand.
I burst out laughing (literal LOL) at this "dramatic" scene.

The good Superman stories deal more with whether or not Superman should use his powers to the fullest extent. They deal with the question of "Should Superman just use all his powers and be our ultimate guardian angel."

Plus, dudes like Martian Manhunter are more powerful than Superman

Who is to say that works in an alternate Universe? And if it did, he wouldn't have much chance against an army of them, magic hammer or not. Thor is not FTL, and it's dbatable on whether the lightning he summons is even magic, I don't think it is because it is still electricity, just because it is there because of magic, doesn't make it magic, but even if it is, magic doesn't harm them like Kryptonite does, it only affects him like everything else, so the lightning would just shock whatever Kryptonian was there, and then the Sun would revive him or her and the battle would continue. And due to the fact Kryptonian do not need sleep, food or water, they would be tireless in battle while Thor would tire out eventually.

"Hulk has unlimited potential"...Superman IS limitless, in all things, and since it's because of his race and that is who the Avegners are fighting in this hypothetical battle, he would be fucked, I don't care how angry he gets, he can't survive the sun/a punch that could dissolve adamantium (friction with the air with the speed of the punch would heat up the fist enough to melt the metal upon impact).
