And I can counter that by saying previous congress was entirely democrat. Majority wise.
#961 - punkrockdude (09/22/2012) [-]
See the difference is with the democratic majority, they weren't completely unreasonable and purposely blocking every bill that the president or his party brought up.

There is no poverty in America?

There is no poverty in western countries. Poor people, sure, but poverty? Get your head out of your ass

Okay? Follow your argument up. You're not proving anything to counter my claim.
#329 - fusrogusta (09/21/2012) [-]
How are you going to tell people to "provide anything to counter your claim?"
You didn't "provide" anything to SUPPORT your claim.

The argument is based off of mine and I'm sitting here trying to understand how people can think there's absolute poverty, here.

Also, you cannot say 'why have 4 kids if you don't earn enough'. Perhaps they had a better job but were made redundant due to the recent economic crisis? Perhaps they have been trying to get a better job?

Poverty comes under two terms. Absolute poverty and Relative poverty. Relative poverty is someone who is poor compared to their general surroundings, and someone who cannot achieve their potential socially, physically and financially in their current position.
Absolute poverty is literally living on around a dollar a day.
In America, the majority of the poor are relative but there are absolute. Also in the UK, where I live. Infact, London has an extremely high poverty rate.
Poverty exists in just about every country.

It's exactly what I'm referring to, but, give me an example of absolute poverty in the US.

Poverty isn't a bunch of Asian/African kids you'd see on an ActionAid advert or a group of people kidnapped by Kony.

The homeless who aren't even in shelters. The people you don't see on the news and media. I don't live there so I can't say first-hand. I can say about London however as that is where I live.

Here, there are accomodations for those people. Shelters, restraunts such as Subway giving free food, and just random donations. I never see a homeless person with nothing. Some smoke cigarettes, some eat burgers, but there's no absolute poverty.

Just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it exists. I can't see air but I know its there.

It's not I haven't seen it, it's that it doesn't exist -____-

"To start off, there's no such thing as "poverty" in the US."

Stopped reading there.

You cannot make me believe that there's true poverty in the US, because it simply doesn't exist.

Spoken like a true sheltered suburban kid whose been indoctrinated to believe all poor people in the US are freeloaders.

Have you ever woken up in the morning, knowing it's time to go to your low paying job and work 10 hours? Do you ever look at your kids and feel terrible because you can't give them the things they deserve? No, you don't, because you're sitting at your computer, with your high speed internet connection. You're probably going to go to the kitchen soon and grab yourself a snack. The person I just described is thankful to have 3 meals a day, if they can.

But keep on believing poverty only exists in Africa.

It's not just Africa, it's a lot of countries. However, the poverty that exists here, in the US, is not that of true poverty. The one with ignorance is you for believing that there is in fact true poverty, here, and for assuming that I don't know how it really is.
User avatar
#612 - doctordalek (09/22/2012) [-]
"True" poverty? What is that? Do you have to be living in your own shit to be considered living in "true" poverty in your eyes?

Since you're just making wild statements, I'll show you what poverty looks like here.

http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/29/us/cnnheroes-usa-poverty/index.html

That's one face of poverty, and if you think that isn't a big deal, you're wrong.

The government and other associations/accomodations giving poor people help is not true poverty. True poverty, aka absolute poverty, is that of third world countries'. If your'e going to keep bringing your same point, don't reply, cause it's not getting you anywhere.

#714 - doctordalek (09/22/2012) [-]
Well since I've told you that your definition of poverty is wrong and you refuse to acknowledge it, I guess were done here.

Tell that to the homeless people who live in the alleys behind my apartment, or the shelter i volunteer at... No personal offense to you, America is much more well off then a lot of places, but please, educate your self or prove your point, perhaps give a definition. thumbed you up to even the butthurt.

Subway and other accomodations giving food to homeless people, or just random citizens giving spare change is not true poverty. And about the red thumbs, I don't care. What do they matter?
