Consoles you play when you're at home, it's late, and you don't have shit to do. Handheld games are what you play when you're out, you can't go home, and you don't have shit to do. Pretty different.

I have a Vita, it's pretty sweet. Theres only two problems I have with it.
1. When playing a frustrating game you can't shake it around or throw it like you would a controller.
2. The Battery life only lasts a few hours.
Other than that I like it. My friend has a PS3 so I play both quite often. But I prefer my PSvita.
