I honestly don't think that society as we know it would have been created had there been no religion. In the first River Valley Civilizations (Mesopotamia, Egypt, etc.) the cities were built as centers of trade, but then leaders started calling themselves the sons of their gods, everybody believed them, and the following of a leader to take over other tribes, thus there would have been no culture-mixing across large distances, and, as I think that war is the primary reason that technology developed in these civilizations, allowing us humans to adapt to nature and spread over the world. Therefore, if religion didn't exist, our technological advancement would be slowed substantially, if not altogether stopped. So, though without religion we would not have that reason to hate each other as well as our other, modern-world problems, but we also wouldn't have the comforts that we have come to take for granted over the years, nor would we have a 50 year life expectancy rate, much less the 90-year average life expectancy that we have today. However, if a magical wave swept across the world turning everybody in the world either into athiests or a single religion, life would be better. But, that's not going to happen, so we have to deal with the extremists and tolerate others who don't share the same beliefs as we do.

That's true that we needed it at one point to bring us together, it was the driving force behind a lot of things, but we do not need it now. Atheism has only erupted over the past 100 years and is growing at a steady rate, as soon as people begin to realize that what they are doing is an act of fiction, it will probably be gone in the next 200 years. All it takes is some education and some critical, logical, thinking.

I commented on that post, and I pointed out that those are all examples of religious extremism and that most religious people are actually nice people who don't shove their beliefs down other people's throats. Those events and comments were horrible, I do not deny that, but if all, or even a quarter, of religious people were extremists, then I'd agree. But the truth is that the vast majority people who have religion have their religion because it makes them happy, not because they believe that every other religion is evil.

Do you not think the world would be a better place without it? That's all I'm saying. Pragmatically although there's no way to prove it, more than likely everyone is wrong.
