Utorrent is probably the best torrent program you can use.

The torrent file is sort of a list of files for your torrent program to download.
Think of it like Winrar is to rar. files as Utorrent is to torrent files.
Both rar. and torrent files are useless with out a program to extract them.

Also know the concept of seeding and leaching.
A seeder is someone who puts a piece of the file out there for download and parts of the file will be downloaded from the computer of other seeders. The seeders computer is sending files to the leachers (one who downloads) computer. The more seeders there are, the more information will be sent to your computer at once, meaning a faster download.
Leachers (downloaders) are people who are also currently downloading the file. Since the computer can only send so much at once, the more leachers there are, the slower the download.

Basically for a decent download:
Seeders=good
Leachers=bad

Seeders>Leachers for it to work well (if at all)

(The files you downloaded will remain on your computer so don't worry.)

Though it makes me a bad person in the eyes of people who put out torrents, I NEVER seed a file because I enjoy my internet at a decent speed. Seeders are noble people in the eyes of torrent communities.
