This was already known. Compared to dogs, cats have only recently begun to domesticate, and when it first started happening cats domesticated themselves to humans more on their terms. It was more like a mutual agreement thing where cats initially started off hunting the field mice in the crop fields and the humans liked how their crops weren't getting fucked up.

They started from that mutual agreement standpoint and began to domesticate in a manner more similar to dogs. However, dogs have way more genetic conditioning, as they've been man's companions for a great many more years than cats and are more likely to be easily domesticated because of that genetic conditioning making them predisposed to it.

Cats are starting to get that conditioning over time, however they have more independent natures, and most cats (especially if it was a stray in the wild at some point) are still conditioned to the mutual agreement logic, and will operate on a more suspicious manner. They don't have the killing or maiming potential that a dog does, so they can be more inherently suspicious of people and other large animals because it really won't be able to do defend itself if it came down to it. This can also be part of the reaosn that so many small dogs are so aggressive. They can't really hurt you, but they try to throw up a facade that they can.

However, cats are less likely to have this sort of behavior if they were domesticated at birth. They become immediately familiar with humans during their important developmental years and become much more trusting. This is further enhanced by if the owner is the one that raises the cat. Even getting the cat within the first year of its life can make it much more likely to behave in a more trusting and friendly manner as it more readily identifies with you since you are one of the first things it knew, as opposed to you being a sudden new element after its already had to fend for itself.
