I'm straight.. and even if i wasn't i'd still know that you need to evaluate people of interest by more than just appearance, and an attitude like that is fairly indicative of being close minded., or at least highly uneducated on the topic.

I didn't mean to imply it was, I was saying that people reacted poorly to it and started thinking as much.

It's good that there's a first step, yes, but that alone won't be enough. There need to be improvements on it before it'll be effective. Still, I have to admit that you make a good point about it being a well-known effort to treat women like human beings.

I agree that 95% of women in media are used simply as a romantic interest with minor plot uses, but we shouldn't just make certain interactions necessary to prove it isn't sexist. We simply need to stop only throwing women in as romantic pawns. Throw in a few females who have no bearing to romance, only friendship or plot or whatever.

Yeah, but the steps are ineffective. The Bechdel test is horribly inaccurate. As an example, look at "Manos" the Hands of Fate. One of the worst movies ever made, horribly misognyist, and it passes the Bechdel test anyway.

I do agree that some measure should be taken, but not this specific measure. It doiesn't work and it just serves to make feminists look bad when people react like they did in the comments and think feminism is stupid.
#58 - Protomix (11/07/2013) [-]
feminism isn't stupid, the concept of feminism bred by reactionaries and extremism is. The bechdel test is flawed, but it's a well known indicator of female writing that has been implemented as a first step towards the goal of...treating female characters like human beings?
User avatar #60 - Ohforf (11/07/2013) [-]

Yes, and actually I should rephrase that, there is usually only one guy in the movie if you discount cameo appearances like waiters and taxi drivers, unless of course shes sleeping with both of them and/or can't choose between them. Then there are two guys, but those two still never pass that "test".
#55 - Protomix (11/07/2013) [-]
The bechdel test exists because it's a measure of an issue in female writing in general television, not an ideal check but a good indicator nonetheless. I know what you mean when you're saying this but even when a guy in this movie doesn't pass the test, it's more for relevance of writing and he's still treated as a standalone character.
User avatar #71 - frenetic (11/07/2013) [-]

No someone tries to shove down their ideological biased bullshit down a form of entertainment where nobody gives a shit about politics. The movie industry was doing just fine without their bullshit. Also men are stereotyped as much if not more than women in movies yet somehow that's not sexists according to feminists. Proving once again that it's a matter of misandry and not equality.
User avatar #62 - Blargosnarf (11/07/2013) [-]
You should never change a story because someone is offended, coming from a writer, if I was told to change even a scene in a story because some loudmouth was upset by it, I would feel obliged to sock the in the mouth.
#64 - Protomix (11/07/2013) [-]
it's not a matter of being offended. it's a matter of the fact that I have almost never found a female character I could support or empathize with because they weren't treated as human beings or left as one dimensional because they existed only as foils or supports to male characters. It's a matter that a female character is treated as an antagonist or as a negative figure for embodying characteristics male characters are glorified for. You're not being a better writer by turning a blind eye to female characters, you're handicapping yourself and calling it a strength
User avatar #52 - Ohforf (11/07/2013) [-]
That test is flawed. See my post above, but for one quick problem, it passes the test even if two women talk about how they're useless sluts who need to stay in the kitchen and other obviously misogynistic bullshit because they don't mention men.
#54 - Protomix (11/07/2013) [-]
I'm not going to say that the test itself if an ideal measure, but would you rather nothing be done at all? It's not just a matter of feminism, I legitimately cant like or support a female character when they only exist when it's to act as a foil or ornament for a male character and their personality is never extended beyond that. The fact that sweden is taking steps is more than anyone else has done thus far.
User avatar #56 - Ohforf (11/07/2013) [-]

Despite not knowing you, after having stalked your page for a solid five minutes in my infinite boredom, I have decided I love you. Rather, I have decided I love the impression you leave: intellect, humor, and a subtle apathy towards the monotony that is existence all wrapped up in one nice, neat little package....or so my mind imagines. Anyways, I just thought you might find it nice to hear that someone out there thinks you're cool and other such ******** . Adieu, monsieur.
