well pure socialism does not work but nor does pure capitalism. The united states is and has been based on a hybrid theory of the two. Allow companies to act on there own as long as there actions do not harm or hold back the other people of this country. When they do regulation by the government occurs. This hybrid theory is the one that both the republicans and the democrats and even most western European countries hold to.
Europe holds close to the more socialistic side of capitalism and will be called the liberal side. Republicans and Romney hold to the more pure capitalistic side and will be called the conservative. Democrats and Obama sit most near the middle of this spectrum and will be called the moderates. However no modern country or major political entity holds to a strong socialistic viewpoint.
