Naruto is one of those Generic cliche shows that is JUST good enough to continue, but is pretty bad to anyone who actually pays attention to anime. Same goes for Bleach, One-piece (to a lesser extent), Detective Conan (or "Case Closed" in the dub), etc.

I have watched nearly a thousand anime so far from start-to-finish (not even kidding, I can link you to my anime list if you want), and I can say with confidence that Naruto is VERY overrated. The vast majority of it's fanbase are kids aged 6-13, who don't know better entertainment, or just don't care.

Popularity does not equal quality. Popularity equals profit, which equals continuation of the series. Quality has nothing to do with it. Naruto has a lot of fans, yes. but if you tried asking people who actually watch a LOT of anime (100+ series), they will likely not like it. Why? because Naruto is generally not watched by anime fans. It is watched by other people looking for easy entertainment. and these other people outnumber the actual anime fans, thus why it's 'popular'. but as soon as they start knowing what they're actually talking about, and have things to compare it to: most agree that Naruto is very overrated. It's equivalent to people being stranded on an island from birth with only one book series to read as their entertainment; of course it's popular on the island: it's the only thing they know.

Naruto is popular because it is easy to understand (thus why the vast majority of it's fanbase are kids), it's about ninjas (again, popular with kids), it has lots of humour, and lots of action. However: it has several plot-holes, it has countless cliches, the "lots of humor" it does have are childish and immature, and the majority of the episodes are nothing but pointless, senseless filler that exist only for the publishers to make an extra quick buck.
