I figured he might be, but because sarcasm is commuted verbally and with motion, not through pure text, I wasn't very sure, so I simply made my point.

Yeah, Stanley Parable's really cool, but thank you for reminding me about the That Game Company games! I totally forgot I bought that collection. I haven't even touched them yet. Thanks.

But since you seem to play a lot of them, do you have any recommendations for some good indie games? Preferably some 3D ones? I am a huge fan of Brothers, but I really wish there were more 3D indie games like it, since the puzzle-platforming genre is all but dead for AAA games.

Stanley parable...depending if its your kind of thing. i really enjoyed it's humor. If you own a ps3, flower and journey for sure( i still consider them indie considering how tiny their team was when they started). I have absolutely enjoyed the hat in Time alpha, although if I can see if you want to avoid it because it is incomplete right now.

I know. I'm a huge fan of a lot of kickstarter projects, but they still don't really have the variety that I want. The vast majority of indie games are retro 2D platformers, which I guess I shouldn't dismiss, but its hard not to after playing my 30th one. And really what it comes down to is that I like games to have a huge amount of polish in their controls, which unfortunately indie devs don't have the time and money to give to their games in 99% of cases. The rare gem that comes out of the dozens of indie games in a genre they excel at, platforming, still isn't going to play as nice as a game that had tons of play testing from a big studio, like Rayman Legends or Donkey Kong Country Returns.

They have gotten a lot better recently, but yeah, indie games for the most part don't have the variety and polish that make me really fall in love with games, certainly when compared with the AA and AAA games a decade ago. I totally see your point though. I should try harder to look for small games.

oh ok, i see what you mean. In that respect yes it is a better time, i was mostly talking about how big companies used to make amazing games now make shit. A lot of indie games are fucking faptasitc.
#14 - Neodude (04/22/2014) [-]
The problem with the large companies, is that because they are so large, they have to bring in large amounts of money to ensure survival. To bring in the money, they find what works really well, and what has a significant enough longevity to continue making money. the reason gameplay is being simplified is the larger audience doesn't want to have to think too much whilst playing games(shocker). It's the downfall of being massive, you need to bring in alot of shit to stay massive. It's why some companies periodically downsize, lets them worry less about funds so they can focus on games( team behind bioshck infinite is a great example. Skimmed down to a handful of people for that reason.)

I completely disagree with that. Gen 6 consoles had a huge amount of variety; a lot more than the TONS of generic brown and bloom shooters we have now. And you know what you had in 2004? World of Warcraft, Metal Gear Solid 3, Half Life 2, Paper Mario 2, GTA: San Andreas, Katamari Damacy, Fable, Sly 2, Chronicles of Riddick, and Ninja Gaiden.

That is about as big a spread as you can get, and they are all very original games. Compare that to the big games of this year. Metal Gear Ground Zeroes, which is half of a game, Titanfall, which, despite having robots, is basically another brown CoD, inFamous SS, which has 6 enemy types in the game and two bosses, Evolve, which is Left 5 Dead, Watch Dogs, which has been completely dumbed down to the point of being Assassin's Creed with guns, and a bunch of good looking but unoriginal Nintendo games like Smash Bros, Mario Kart, and Kirby.

Now that is being very harsh and admittedly a little dismisive of a lot of those games, and I obviously haven't played the ones that aren't out, but judging on the pre release stuff for them and the ones that are out, it really doesn't compare to 2004. The new consoles especially are kind of a joke when it comes to original games. Games have too big an audience and too much money on the line to take risks like PS2 and GC games did a decade ago. Something like Shadow of the Collosus or Katamari would never be funded today without being watered down to appeal to a bigger audience like games such as Watch Dogs and Bioshock Infinite have been. Not to mention all the pre order DLC and season passes that would be strapped on to them. And indie games are cool, but if you're looking for something original with a budget behind it, you're better off looking at games a decade ago.

Lets see what we got gen 7 then, shall we?
Dark souls/demons souls, Deus ex: HR, Limbo, Braid, Minecraft, Deus ex: HR, Oblivion, skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout new vegas, No more heroes, MGR: Revengeance, Uncharted, the last of us, Little big planet, Flower, Assassins creed, Journey, MGS4, Portal and portal 2, Ratchet and clank future series, Rayman origins and legends, the bioshock series, Papo and yo, Final fantasy 13.

Which of those are grey and brown shooters? You know i could very easily make a long-ass list of shitty ps2 games for example. It's easy to ignore the whole other side to an argument, but the thing is, doing that makes you look like a retard.

I was just comparing 2004 with 2014, dude.
#16 - Neodude (04/22/2014) [-]
I have one problem with what your implying, and it's that you seem to think if a game doesn't have a major budget backing it, that it can't be good. I'll say now what i have been saying to several others. Check out more games, just because they aren't super massive productions doesn't mean they can't be outstanding games.

yeah, 400 clones of farmville, 90 minecraft clones, and how many call of duty games? blizzard is slowly dying after trading their soul for cash, ea has eaten all the studios of the golden age, if bethesda keeps paring its games down, fallout 4 will play itself while you watch. 30% of the games coming out in the last 3 years are reiterations of successful flash games. theres been maybe 2 or 3 good RTS games in the last 6 years. studios that have the resources to take risks on original ideas dont because they dont want to loose money, and those groups that do have fresh ideas usually lack those necessary money and talent resources to see their project through. there are exceptions, of course, but you have to dig through a sea of shit to find the chocolate.
User avatar #9 - YoursTruley (04/22/2014) [-]
yea but games back then didn't force feed you how to get through the games, you had to figure it out. They were an actual challenge to beat and it was satisfying. Not to mention game play has started to be more about cutscenes and that kind of bullshit. Variety is a good point but overall game play has gone back a step.
#32 - anonymous (04/22/2014) [-]
Lmao no.

Back then you could read the manual and, I hate to say it, but most of them weren't all that fun. They were difficult for the sake of it and they told shitty stories.
#11 - Neodude (04/22/2014) [-]
Again, way too narrow of a scope on the games you are looking at. I'm going to sound like a broken record but if you broaden your view you will be amazed by what you can find. I mean, I found a game about racing cats that included full racing sound effects. All in all, it's the highly advertised games that make up the majority of the games you are talking about, but they don't even come close to be the larger percentage of games.
