It's all about how religious people interpret religious texts. You can deny all you want that they're breaking islamic rules, but in their eyes, it's the moderate muslims who are not following the quran properly.

I am not making ridiculous assumptions. I am talking about things talked about regularly in the news relative to the area and ISIS. It's actually really simple.... Rebels fighting Assad, ISIS wanting Rebel lands, people who support Assad and are fighting rebels for no reason other than they are fighting the same people at the same time, and it is a good way to get rewarded for doing what you were doing already...

I'm not denying that all the islamic extremist groups represent a very small percentage of the overall amount of muslims. But no one can deny that these extremists are muslims. And since all religious text is interpreted, and since its often very un-specific, there can be no real definition of what true muslim is. Islam has, not so much in the west, but in many other places issues. And admitting that these issues are tied to the religion is the only way to start solving them.
