The metal is a superconductor of a type which rejects magnetism, essentially. Pouring the liquid nitrogen (I'm assuming that's what it is) cools it down to the point that it begins superconducting, causing the magnet to float.

Its the Meissner Effect. The thing on the bottom is an iron block, they pour nitrogen on it to lower its temperature and resistance turning it into a super conductor. The electrons move freely without loss of energy, the flow of energy creates a magnetic field that opposes the magnet on top. Quarks are not involved, that would have to be a very powerful reaction to move protons and neutrons. It is not a super fluid, a superfluid has no viscosity and would not be able to be contained in the bowl.

User avatar #355 - xProjectZerox (01/27/2011) [-]
Scientists have achieved temperatures billionths of a degree above 0 K, A rubidium Bose Einstein Condensate requires 1.7 10 -7 K to form. so yea

youre basing this on unobservable data. this could be true, or it could easily be a gif editor and some string.

but what's Important is that they are super conductive and frictionless, allowing for charges to carry on, and the smallest magnetic field amplified
