Quick question: is this dog in mortal danger, or is the bear just showing affection?
User avatar #26 - Dember (10/18/2014) [-]
There's a whole show on Animal Planet about this; odd friendships between different species of animals. The sled dogs are good friends with the polar bears; every year when they show up, they all play together before the bears go on their way again. The dog in that gif isn't freaking out or anything; if it was, it would be thrashing around, struggling, showing teeth and so on; and the bear could obviously be doing a lot of damage if it wanted to. They look like good buds to me.

Nah, rynkar is right, the dog is completely safe. They are just cuddling.
Imagine if the dog knew , however , in what mortal danger he was of being mauled.
User avatar #20 - rynkar (10/18/2014) [-]
I would say the dog is just being cuddled, since there is no blood or really aggresive reaction from the dog, plus the dog in the back doesnt look worried.
Could be wrong, but Im just guessing.
User avatar #13 - crazyolitis (10/18/2014) [-]
I could do that, I guess. Will have to search for some new gifs, though.

Sorry, but there's just not enough .gifs or pics, for as far as I know. I prefer to keep the pic count of a comp to a minimum of 10. I could have like 3 to 5, but not many more.

You were able to get out of the wheel chair in a certain amount of time, while I could not. being in a wheel chair should have made you realize how difficult it is in the first place. people in wheel chairs don't expect special treatment, they're the most independent people, but when something as simple as a step to the side or a door be held for them, it's greatly fucking appreciated. we can do whatever we want to do but some empathy goes a long fucking way when everything is 10 times more effort than someone who is able bodied. by your logic an old man who has fallen has the ability to get up by himself so why be courteous and offer a helping hand? learn some empathy good god.

See. if it was just "insensitive prick" I wouldn't mind. But yours is "dumb insensitive prick" time. Some people are mean, complete assholes even- but they can be intelligent and make sense. You don't. You represent a highly subjective and ignorant point of view that doesn't even seem to grasp the sad fact about us, humans, being the leading cause of the extinction of aforementioned species.

Who the fuck do you think hunts them relentlessly, murdering far more specimens than it's natural, all for their rare and absurdly expensive horns? I can sure promise you it's not the lions.

tl;dr - it's us, humans, who killed them out, so it's also our responsibility to protect what's left of them.
#109 - bonklord (09/26/2014) [-]
I understand your reasoning, but let me point this out about humans.

Humans are the sole organism on our planet that has ever had the ability to influence, change, and modify the world, and the state of habitats, as well as the plants and animals that reside in those habitats. We're the only species by human records that has shown the capacity to wipe out an entire species out of greed and/or necessity; and conversely choose to nurture and promote the selective growth and modification of other organisms.

Knowing that Humanity holds so much control over nearly every other organism on this one planet that we all share, can we truly say it is not the responsibility of humanity to share nurture and help the organisms around succeed and grow alongside us? I myself, being a College Major in Biology solemnly believe that it is not only our responsibility, but our right as sentient beings to maintain and promote the growth of the beautiful habitats and organisms that we share this planet with.
#90 - anonymous (09/26/2014) [-]
I kind of agree with you. It seems to me that this is all a part of our worlds evolution. Yes, we did come along and are pretty much completely responsible for wiping them out, but at the same time, if we had not done it then something else would have. It's also opening up a door for another creature or species to come in and fill the previous species niche. Who are we to stop it from happening?
User avatar #71 - mrnpc (09/26/2014) [-]
We feel the need to protect them because we, as a species, have pushed them and hundreds of other animals to extinction. Its about taking responsibility for the changes we bring to this planet
User avatar #83 - flemsdfer (09/26/2014) [-]
But if there are less of them than I have fingers on one hand, why bother? They can't really come back from that without massive amounts of inbreeding, which would probably lead to defects and complications that would also make them not come back.

I could understand us trying to fix a mistake humans made, but I don't really see any saving them at that number.
User avatar #85 - mrnpc (09/26/2014) [-]
At this point I think its less about saving the species and more about keeping the poachers from killing them horribly for money
User avatar #87 - flemsdfer (09/26/2014) [-]
Which I don't see much of a point in doing. If that was the case, then the only goal is "Just so you can't have it". It's like a grocery store throwing away tons of bread because it sat there for 1 day in the sense of, "It's going to rot no matter what, but no one can get any use out of it, because......?"

I certainly wouldn't risk getting shot, or shoot someone else to defend something no one can save, just so it dies the way I want it to.
User avatar #119 - vrthbvyfa (09/26/2014) [-]
whut, dont you realise that those rhinos are alive as well and deserve their right to live as much as you.

imagine aliens came to earth and started hunting humans to extinction.

Protecting an animal isnt spiting poachers, its protecting the innocent from exploitation.
User avatar #120 - flemsdfer (09/26/2014) [-]
They don't do it to spite the poachers, they don't do it to save the rhinos. Why do they do it? For the animal's right to live? We don't have armed guards protecting the innocent gazelle's right to life from the lions. Things hunt other things in life for personal benefit, and that will never stop. If you can't actually gain something from intervening, then why do it? Unless they can actually make a difference, it's a group of people wasting time, energy, and life just to make sure that rhino dies how they want it to die. Right now I can't think of anything more pointless.
User avatar #88 - mrnpc (09/26/2014) [-]
Fair enough, but maybe the people guarding it feel differently. Perhaps one of the guards killed one and is seeking pennance
User avatar #74 - Muppetz (09/26/2014) [-]
Yeah but in the grand scheme of things, humans a responsible for like .00000001% of all the species that have gone extinct?
I mean, species go extinct all the time. It sounds bad but its the way life on earth is.
I guess Im just struggling to understand why this one is special.
User avatar #75 - mrnpc (09/26/2014) [-]

okay... insensitive prick time
but
why do people feel the need to help people who are stabbed or get shot? Like I get how it's doing a good deed and they're a fellow human being that were wrongfully hurt. But I can not see a valid reason we should care if they die. The world WILL continue to spin on without these people. Couldn't you just do something more productive like idk volunteering or advocating for good causes around the world?
No?

Im pretty sure those 4 rhinos arent going to make a turnaround for the revival of their species.
Isnt that the whole reason people are taken off life support? Like, ok he's pretty fucked we can let him die now.

I agree that mercy and goodwill has its place, but isnt there a point however unpopular and distasteful it might be that you have to draw the line?
I dont want the rhinos to die out, but shit man, i think this one is a lost cause.I think you can cut your losses and walk now.

But why value animal life over human life?

Would it not be wise to value our safety over an endangered species?
#78 - mintyfreshmenthol (09/26/2014) [-]
because animal life as opposed to human is innocent they have no quarrels each other the way we do they live to survive. us on the other hand are greedy and cause most of the worlds problems and there are 7 billion of us and 3 of them its something that will never again be seen by our children. i value innocent endangered life over a human any day
User avatar #82 - inanimateobject (09/26/2014) [-]
