i was persuaded to buy the 500 after i talked with a park ranger who was attacked by a bear in the sierras.
she emptied her 357 into its face and the thing still managed to get a bite down on her arm, she only managed to get away when she stabbed it in the muzzle with a knife and ran.
if i ever find myself in that kind of situation, i know im prepared. they use the 500's for Alaskan wildlife service because they can penetrate the skull of a grizzly.
as for the ammo, i dont personally load my own. but my grandpa does. i usually order the 325-350 grain deer hunting rounds. they usually make them more pointed than the average round for better penetration. i have a box of the exposed core rounds for killing deer, supposedly exposing the core as a sharp tip makes for faster kills, but in my opinion it would just go right through without doing any real damage.

Never had to use it. But I always kinda worried that if i did it wouldn't be enough.
Im keeping my eye out for deals on 44s or maybe a 500 but I dont know if I hike enough to justify spending the money.
I think my 357 would do for pretty much anything im likely to encounter.

oh yeah, if you want fire rate you gotta go with a semi auto handgun, having to pull back the trigger every time is just time consuming.
the image above isnt my 500, but its similar. mine has a little gold "S&W" on the barrel
and its a double action. takes 20 guage shells and 50 cal magnum rounds.

though i go shooting allot ive only actually had to use my 500 in one case when i was in the sierras and had a black bear tracking me, luckily i didnt have to kill him and the noise scared him off.

Whatever you do, do not buy a Remington R1 1911 if it was made since 2007. Ever since Cerberus bought Remington, all their stuff have turned to shit. Rusts easily.

Also recent Colt 1911s are crap as well. I don't care about the name like some idiots out there, Colt is not the be all of 1911s even if it's a classic one.

The problem is that the 1911 is that it's an outdated design, and requires a lot of maintenance/fine tuning and high quality parts. You get what you pay for.

So for your money and ease of use I will always recommend a Glock. Looks like a blocky plastic piece of shit but won't rust and fail like a poor quality 1911 will. 1911's only real redeeming factor over a modern Glock is that it's a sexy as all hell gun.
User avatar #121 - beretta (04/23/2014) [-]
Although the remington is overpriced for what it is, it's still decent and not gonna disintegrate after having water in it, just like others won't.
if you don't own the gun, please don't spout shit like this
User avatar #123 - roliga (04/23/2014) [-]
I owned a Remington 870 post cerberus buy. Thewulfman is right, remington's quality control is literally shit. The guns rust faster than any other guns, the parts rattle, poor machine work, etc...
User avatar #122 - thewulfman (04/23/2014) [-]
Just gonna summon someone who knows more about guns than me, roliga.

i use one when i go backpacking in case of bears.

Freddos used to be 10P.
We're all "Fine"
But the thing is there's a store called DFS that promotes limited time sales but there is hardly a 2 second break between these.
I'm guessing on the fine one I don't talk to many people in England.
User avatar #62 - Rockaman (04/22/2014) [-]
Freddos used to be 5p, but now they are 20p! Outrageous!
User avatar #68 - terafyde (04/23/2014) [-]
Huh? They're 17p where I live.
I have an inside guy giving me a discount, these connections matter in a world where Freddos will be 80P soon.
#6 - inept (04/21/2014) [-]
The granddaughter bit is a reference to the lyrics of a song called 'Year 3000' by a boy-band called Busted or Mcfly or something... Freddos are little chocolate things that are remarked to have have gone up in price significantly; and DFS is a store that sells sofas/couches Whatever you guys call them and they're always on sale..

North American equivalent to DFS would be The Brick.

#50 - olias (04/22/2014) [-]
Somehow, I knew what they were.

Kevin Smith told a story where he was in Ireland I think, and some little shit looked at him, and then looked at the bag of...ahem...crisps (a bald eagle somewhere died for me using that term, bear with me) and then loudly proclaimed to his mother that kevin smith was TAYTO or sumshit.
#11 - thefatbastard (04/21/2014) [-]
Gone are the days of these bad boys and tranform-a-snacks.
You know what I find really odd most of all though? There's no longer the "5p" sweets, like the pick and mixes of small white plain paper bags. Certainly isn't any around where I live, although I suppose it's for the better.
Still, kinda' feel sorry for the youth who have to pay fortunes for shit food now at their age.

I remember my primary school disco had these at like 25p a bottle, and f course everyone was of the age where they were the shit to be seen drinking one whilst you had hair jell out the wazoo and listened to songs you didn't fully understand but would sure as hell dance to.

You've got me wracking my brain now, I remember these long tubes of sherbert/sugar which were roughly fruit flavored, but I can't remember what they were called, and I thought they were fairy wands or sugar wands but google disagrees with me T_T
