If you are talking about purchasing power and the rate of inflation you have a very important point, and while it's a complicated mess and way beyond my current education, I can offer one basic explanation.

Inherently the basic cycle of capitalism is supposed to work on a circular flow. Businesses hire workers, workers produce products, workers get paid, works use that money to go out and buy things, the more things people buy the more demand goes up and the bigger the market gets. This in turns leads to expansion and profits. Both of which should in turn allow business to hire more workers and increase pay and therefore quality of living over time.

When the wheel turns everybody wins, and as long as inflation is below wage increases purchasing power of individual workers increases.

However we don't really have that today. The wheel isn't really turning. Its more like money is being siphoned up by the rich.

Purchasing power, the thing about it. Well, it's simple.
We're totally fucked. The government and most states operate on huge deficits.
The Federal Reserve which is privately owned prints as much money as it wants.
Inflation is inevitable.

From my very limited understanding, I don't think we can do shit about inflation because of the way the system is set up. What we CAN do is pay workers more, and adjust the minimum wage for inflation indefinitely. Which in turn would probably lead to a healthier economy where inflation is less of a problem.

Or I could be totally wrong but this seems logical to me.

I just want to point out that the US gov WANTs inflation because discourages saving and encourages spending to stimulate the economy. It's not an issue of whether we can deal with it, it is a matter of do we want to deal with it, and sadly the answer is no.

There was only one area where UKIP got a majority. However it got 12% of the national vote, so only got one seat in parliament.
This means that 12% of the UK is represented by 1 man. Pretty stupid really, it's the same with other parties.

Except human genetic modifications can potentially lead to some serious social consequences that we are not ready for.

First if genetic modifications are expensive, only wealthy families are going to be able to afford them. If that's the case, then you are going to see a host of wealthy families who essentially end up raising genetically superior children. Those children will in turn end up in high ranking positions and, over time, you will widen the gap between the rich and the poor even more than you have now. Moreover, you set up the human race for eventual genocide and the creation of two classes of humans, genetically superior and genetically inferior.

Second, some genetic diseases cause a competitive advantage in humans when certain conditions are met. By eliminating them from the spectrum, you reduce that competitive advantage and weaken our ability to evolve naturally.

The prospects of genetic modifications really don't sound good to me, and until we can strongly lay out the limits on what we would be allowed to do with them, I don't think we should research and experiment with it.
#99 - clannadqs (05/11/2015) [-]
Dude, fuck off with that shit. Sure, I agree that the US should go ahead and invest in researching how to modify DNA in embryos, but you are totally skipping over the entire portion of the US leading medical research by such a huge margin it isn't even funny. Let the Chinese research it and we might start later on, who knows. But this isn't a step back in research.
#89 - anonymous (05/11/2015) [-]

If you're talking about genetic research, I really do not like that shit. It just gives too much power to people. Sure, if they want to prevent birth defects 'n shit, but I feel like that will slowly progress into genetically modifying your child into some sort of super human.

Modification of embryo DNA is universally recognized as being immoral worldwide in research. This is because it brings with it the prospect of genetically inferior and superior people, similar to how it is in GATTACA.
Genetic modification of humans is fine, the problem comes in when germ line cells are also modified. This means that the modifications will propagate through the generations and centuries. This is also a safety issue, because at this time, most of the modifications we make carry unintended side-effects, as gene targeting isn't completely accurate and ends up affecting non-targated loci.
#32 - krypticwizdom (05/11/2015) [-]

Children (and embryos) are subject to many decisions made on their behalf by parents that they have no say in. If a mother decides to smoke during pregnancy, that baby might be born with defects that it had no say in. Thus if a parent decides on behalf of their future child that they would like to genetically modify the child so replace a defective gene with a functional one, why shouldn't they be able to?
User avatar #63 - Kairyuka (05/11/2015) [-]
So you're saying it's perfectly alright for a mother to do drugs while pregnant? That she bears no responsibility for her unborn child? Come on, that's a retarded argument
User avatar #76 - Kanoah (05/11/2015) [-]
That's not what he said in the slightest, you just latched on to the first thing you read and ran with it. He's saying that while it's a fucked up thing to do, a mother smoking during a pregnancy is still allowed, even though it could mess up the child. So why shouldn't it be allowed for the mother to instead decide to genetically modify something in the child's favor?
User avatar #78 - Kairyuka (05/11/2015) [-]
So because it's legally allowed it's commendable? That's good logic if you don't want to think for yourself
User avatar #79 - Kanoah (05/11/2015) [-]
What the fuck is wrong with your reading skills? I said that smoking while pregnant is a fucked up thing to do. If we allow something that's fucked up without the child's consent, then why shouldn't we allow something that's beneficial to the child without its consent?
User avatar #84 - Kairyuka (05/11/2015) [-]
But with that logic you assume the laws are perfect. I personally believe it should be illegal to do drugs while you're fucking pregnant.

An embryo has no will
#122 - pioneermhm (05/11/2015) [-]
Fucking dumb-ass, it's not about the embryo itself. It's about the research. The research done on embryos is to develop a new idea known as designer babies. If you don't already know what that is, it's basically modifying the dna of an unborn embryo and affect everything about it, eye colour, hair, height, gender etc. Having something like that is a sure fire way to get into a dystopian future in more than one way. Take for example the Chinese interest in changing gender from female to male for inheritance purposes. THis would fuck up China's population pyramid for years to come . That's just one example.

So, please stop being an "hurr durr religion is bad" edgy cunt and get some fucking sense.

I'm agnostic btw
#142 - Sevenseas (05/12/2015) [-]

User avatar #157 - rakogoki (05/12/2015) [-]
if we cared about the consent of embryos, shouldnt we be asking them if they want to exist before giving birth?
User avatar #158 - Kairyuka (05/12/2015) [-]
There's a difference to consent in existing and consent in being genetically manipulated. Someone else has pointed out that these fetuses would never develop into living human beings anyways so the moral debate is kinda moot at this point.
User avatar #112 - djequalizee (05/11/2015) [-]

h20 isn't alive, bacteria is. And at it's early stages, embryos are just a bunch of eukaryotic cells.
User avatar #161 - Kairyuka (05/12/2015) [-]
Bacteria do not have the potential to turn into living healthy human beings. Try again.
User avatar #162 - djequalizee (05/12/2015) [-]
That's a loaded statement. The fact that something has potential to turn into something else doesn't really mean much. It's still not a human. It was never destined to be a human. It was a bunch of cells, and no matter how much you want to argue how you feel about it that doesn't change the fact that it's a bunch of cells. It doesn't feel, it doesn't breathe, it has no feelings, it has no mind, it has nothing. Should i not be able to masturbate because my sperm cells could potentially be children? Are menstruating women killing unborn babies because their egg cells are being destroyed before they've become developed children? No. We have the potential to help very sick and injured people with stem cell research and then people have to make a big deal out of it because they think it's equal to taking a life. which it scientifically, and i'd argue morally, is not true. I would have let literally all of this go and ignored your comment entirely if you didn't act like a cunt.
User avatar #163 - Kairyuka (05/12/2015) [-]
And who cares how many horribly mutated people we doom to lifetimes of pain in the process right?
User avatar #164 - djequalizee (05/12/2015) [-]
So first off, i'm guessing neither i nor you have any idea how genetic modification works. So don't act like you know that there are going to be horribly mutated people walking around because of research. Second of all, that statement holds zero water. Quoted from the article "A newly discovered type of stem cell could help provide a model for early human development----and, eventually, allow human organs to be grown in large animals such as pigs or cows for research or therapeutic purposes." There is ZERO chance of this happening, because it has nothing to do with genetically modifying people. Stem cells basically mimic other cells, and can be used to repair (or even grow) organs and tissue. This has more of a potential to HELP people with genetic deformities. It's already been proven to work. Do you even understand the topic you're talking about? Because it really doesn't seem like it
#81 - anonymous (05/11/2015) [-]
And thus has no cognitive function or feelings to have any opinion in either way. This experimentation will be initiated and terminated prior to the birth of the embryo, and considering we are only what our memories are, and absolutely no one has memories of being an embryo, there is no problem with this.
You want to hold back scientific experimentation just because you think something will be hurt. Do you know how many people were hurt BEFORE and during the creation of the smallpox vaccine, and do you know how many people are hurt now?

You are just like those people who refuse vaccinations for terrible, but curable, diseases because one person faked results to push his own personal agenda against vaccines (so he could make more money and keep his job(that backfired for him))
User avatar #85 - Kairyuka (05/11/2015) [-]
You're putting words in my mouth. I see an article about experimenting with genetic modification in healthy, innocent fetuses and that is morally deplorable. It has later come to my attention that that's not exactly what's going on, making the moral ambiguity less clear-cut. I approve of scientific progress, but not at any cost.
#37 - kingultra (05/11/2015) [-]
You know who else didn't consent to experimentation? All of the criminals vivisected in ancient Greece to discover ow the body works, all of the Jews experimented on by the Nazi's during WWII that has given us many medical breakthroughs. If you have such a problem with experimentation on embryos then surly you won't stand for the same thing or worse being done to people.

How about you just stop going to the hospital or seeing doctors? Chances are that whatever technique or procedure that they use to help you originates or benefits from the unethical treatment of actual people.
#123 - pioneermhm (05/11/2015) [-]
So, we have better ways of experimentation and you're glorifying the torturing of living fucking people? I hope someone in a black van glues your fist to your ass for experimentation, see how you like it then. Suddenly, it seems like there are more important things than just experimenting isn't there? Almost as if human life is fucking valuable. Eitherway, again it's not about the embryos being researched on, it's about the research being done with them.

The Greek's did good tho, their research into anatomy saved a significant amount of lives.
#148 - kingultra (05/12/2015) [-]
You clearly didn't read the comment chain or you just don't care about how terrible genetic diseases are. People through no fault of their own can be born into a terribly short and painful life, this research could help to save them from this fate but you would condemn them to a life of literal torture simply because you do not like the research being done.

I did not mean to glorify the Nazi's experiments and I can see how that may have been conveyed by my post, I'm sorry about that. What the Nazi's did to the Jews is absolutely deplorable and abominable. The only thing we can take from their example is what not to fucking do in the name of science.
#58 - anonymous (05/11/2015) [-]

User avatar #83 - cshp (05/11/2015) [-]

#59 - kingultra (05/11/2015) [-]
To my limited understanding it gave back data on a bunch of different shit, definitely not worth the cost in my opinion though. I do believe that a lot of the experiments where fruitless, it is a good example on what not to do.
User avatar #38 - Kairyuka (05/11/2015) [-]
Denying use of knowledge gained through unethical methods would make the breech of ethics completely meaningless. This does not mean we should encourage unethical research. Is that hard to understand?
#39 - kingultra (05/11/2015) [-]
So, even though we have benefited so greatly from it we should just stop? Even if it could help us overcome terrible genetic diseases you are saying that people should just live with them rather than try to overcome the disease? Do you have any idea how cruel that is?
User avatar #40 - Kairyuka (05/11/2015) [-]
On the other hand you argue that we should abandon our humanity for the sake of possible progress in science.
#41 - kingultra (05/11/2015) [-]
And just what is our "humanity"? Some God given mold that we must follow? No, it is a concept designed by humans. And exactly how is experimenting on how the article put "The embryos used were "non-viable" so could never have led to a child." losing our humanity? Is it not significantly crueler to condemn untold millions and their families with genetic diseases to short, painful lives rather than do the necessary research to prevent the disease in the first place?

You could have done it on your own anyway

your thumbs ÷ comments = adv thumb per comment
that's a higher ratio than most of the top users
your comments are gold, keep it up.

22306/3244= 6.87 thumbs per comment
