anonymous (05/21/2012) [-] While I respect the theme of what you are trying to say, you're actual argument is contrived, and grasping at strings. It may be noble to think as much, but the truthfully, they are laughing out of a combination of many factors. Insecurities, deep seeded guilty, true apathy, or perhaps mild psychosis. Would you say that "finding something positive" in The Holocaust would be to justify the acts by presenting them as comedic? Also, it's not truly the dead you are respecting. It's those who loved them.

| You really can't... I mean you can. But it would make absolutely no sense, it would be one contradiction after another. Unless you believe we were created by extraterrestrials that early humans confused as gods and angels. Which is pretty crazy, but not more crazy them a magic being in the clouds. #257

draezeth (05/17/2012) [-] You don't know what you're talking about. The only contradictions between the Bible and science nowadays is that science says the Big Bang wasn't God's doing, that life on earth came from lightning hitting prebiotic soup/originating from space, and that all life on earth evolved from one cell. Mind you, none of the above are proven, just conventions, and in fact are still not 100% confirmed. The Big Bang disproves ALL of Christianity... you made literally 0.1 units of sense. You don't phase me. :) Christianity was never proven either... infact MOST if not EVERY religion is not proven. Thumbing me down isn't gonna change my mind. I'm thumbing you down because your comments are ignorant and self-righteous. I never talked about how religion was proven. You just brought that up to have the last word. Could you at least work up the balls to give me credit when I make a more valid point than you do, rather than moving on to some other feeble attempt at making yourself look superior? And while no religion has been proven to be real, there IS evidence. Look at godandscience . org to see what I'm talking about. You act like I never gave Christianity a chance, like I am some ignorant prick, I used to be Christian, They are good people. 70% of Americans are Christian. They are no different then me. However. I grew out of believing such ideas just like Santa and the Tooth Fairy. The idea of a god simply seems childish to me. I'm sorry to offend you. But It's my view. I also only started one-upping you because you claimed to have "schooled" me. I know very well what I am talking about, I memorized my fair share of bible verses too. But I am free to believe what I wish, and that my friend is definetly not Christianity. Now Good day. Your view didn't offend me. I assumed you never had given it a chance, because if you truly knew the Word, you'd know that it doesn't disagree with the Big Bang. This wasn't about one-upmanship, it was about showing you that you had the wrong idea of the Christian faith. #303

terrorrizor (05/17/2012) [-] It's okay, he believes that one day nothing exploded and we came to be and he has the right to be dumb. I'm an Atheist but I don't believe every single scientific "fact" and "explaination" scientists tell us. I just accept the fact that there are somethings we don't know the answers to. We don't always have to fill in the blanks, and we might find in another 100 years that a lot of the stuff we know today in science was wrong because we discovered new facts contradicting the old ones. I get where MrHat is coming from. To some people, being a Christian isn't based sorely on the religious rules, but on what kind of person you are and how you live your life. Thanks dude, I appreciate it. I've actually been labeled as Agnostic for that. People forget, or are just not really aware that Atheism is simply not believing in a God and being religionless. Once people start saying things like "to be a true Atheist, you must believe in this science/theory" is what makes it very close to a religion. Lol. yes you can. Its pretty simple. The bible=what god did science=how god does it. Well put. I'm a Christian, and I believe most of what scientists generally accept as facts today, just with the exception of abiogenesis, and certain aspects of evolution (I believe in evolution, just not that everything came from a single cell). I'm on the fence for the Big Bang. I mean, seriously, why not? I think he was just trying to say in the simplest terms possible that small amounts of matter can contain huge amounts of energy. Or he could be dumb. Either way I need to go get a haircut and eat some Chinese food. Where in the Bible does it say that I can't believe in science? #287

fytech (05/17/2012) [-] In the little text all the way back in the book. No, You can be christian and believe in science, but those to things does not mix well together. You see the bible claims the earth is 6000 years old while science claims it to be 4,5 billion years old. By that the bible leaves out much information of human history and previous life as dinosaurs. You see where I am going? I've never seen any passage in the bible, or grouping of passages that could lead me to believe that the earth is 6000 years old. #339

fytech (05/18/2012) [-] Let’s do a rough calculation to show how this works. The age of the earth can be estimated by taking the first 5 days of creation (from earth’s creation to Adam), then following the genealogies from Adam to Abraham in Genesis 5 and 11, then adding in the time from Abraham to today. Adam was created on Day 6, so there were 5 days before him. If we add up the dates from Adam to Abraham, we get about 2,000 years, using the Masoretic Hebrew text of Genesis 5 and 11.3 Whether Christian or secular, most scholars would agree that Abraham lived about 2,000 B.C. (4,000 years ago). So a simple calculation is: 5 days + ~2000 years + ~4000 years ______________ ~6000 years That's a common misconception. If you read the sentence before the genealogy begins you will see that it is a SUPPOSED family line. This means one of two things. The list is incomplete, only denoting those of the family that were of any greatness, or the list is incomplete because names were lost. I'm in favor of the first personally. Secondly, there is a passage that comes out and says that God doesn't measure time the same way humans do. Can't remember it right now, but I do know that the ratios are different from the King James to other translations, so the ratio has clearly been corrupted between now and the then. How much is not clear, so I still see no problem at all with the age of the earth. An incomplete genealogy and a time dilation do just fine to convince me. On another note entirely, I'm glad there is a religious/science debate on FJ that's not descended into name calling and general stupidity. There are so many theories that contradict SO many things in the bible... It's insane. I think the bible is simply outdated... Christianity was just a way for people to stop wondering "why was I created? What is the meaning of life?" and so on, like almost every religion since the beginning of humanity. An interesting way of looking at it, but I think of science as a way of getting to know God better. In the mean time, pleas point out one theory that is absolutely refuted in the bible. Noah's ark... aka the Great Flood, it's simply impossible. No single man could build and entire ship to house two of every single animal on earth. It is physically impossible to get one of every animal for one, let alone a male and female... there are such things as regional species that are native to different land masses. How was he supposed to get a Grizzly Bear or like... a Giraffe?? How would he wrangle them? How would he get them back to his ship on the other side of the globe? How could God flood the ENTIRE Earth? How did none of the animals not kill each other? Not even with today's technology could you pull this off. Especially using only wood... The only resource available in that time period, and it was scarce too, they don't have alot of lumber just growing out in the desert... It would have just been impossible. DNA bank. Who is to say that god didn't give a guy on earth a machine that would extract DNA from an animal and make clones of said animal when the time came? I think that it's foolish to believe that the earth is 6000 years old. I've read the bible, and nowhere in the book does it mention the age of the earth. I'm not saying that my religion is the one and only true religion, I'm also not saying that God is something that can be measured with modern technology. I do believe however that we are getting close to being able to measure some of his tools. Give the LHC a couple of years. also it created a set of rules to live by, healthy, stable, rules. It was a way of life... That's just religion in a nutshell. No arguing there. It's when people try and say that God is 'speaking' to them that shit gets all screwy.
