Some Atheists follow atheism religiously.
I'm an atheist, but I can see how some people believe in God.

how does one follow atheism?
User avatar #197 - cousin (07/02/2013) [-]
Some people believe that The Big Bang theory is 100% accurate and refuse to believe in anything else. Science is our best guess, and continual improvement.
User avatar #208 - thebritishguy (07/03/2013) [-]
The big bang isn't actually part of some kind of atheist creed, there is a tribe (They're called something like "Piranha") who have no Gods or creation myths they just believe that the Universe always existed, so they are atheists who don't believe in the big bang or evolution, atheism isn't dependant on any type of science, although it is correlated with education.

>You can post something regarding a joke on 9/11, and get top page.

9/11 jokes are merely jokes which people dont actually mean. atheist content is usually posted by butthurt atheists who find it difficult to cope with the fact that people believe differently from how they do

>But you will get torn apart if you make fun of the people on flew the plane for being Muslim.

you obviously dont browse this site during the countless number of times atheist faggotry makes its way to front page
User avatar #82 - thereoncewasaman (07/01/2013) [-]
So atheists are butthurt and can't deal with people believing differently, but you are the one coming around giving out red thumbs to people who disagree with you and posting comments that attempt to be intellectual or clever? Makes sense dude. If being frustrated with assholes and stupid people is considered being butthurt then I am butthurt as fuck.

Exactly it's pretty pathetic that people complain about how we question or persecute their beliefs but if you look at any anti-religious post it either has negative thumbs or all of the top comments are "quit being an asshole about your atheism". But I still like to post on this site anyway, there is always a few people who agree with the message.
User avatar #7 - ghostisaho (06/30/2013) [-]
as a christian, i will love and tolerate the shit out of you and bless your soul no matter how much you don't believe in them
User avatar #8 - thereoncewasaman (06/30/2013) [-]
I appreciate that you don't hate on people for not believing what you believe, but I don't want you to bless my soul; not because I want to spite you but I don't think it has any significance or effect. But my comment was more of an observation that there seems to be a disconnect between what many theists say is happening (that their beliefs are being persecuted) and what is happening (that they are persecuting others beliefs, or rather lack of belief). Of course its not everyone but it happens too much.

User avatar #14 - ghostisaho (06/30/2013) [-]
i see. in england, where my parents families emigrated to, there is a lot more tolerance, and if someone says anything it is usually sarcastic or to take the piss for a good laugh, which i very positive.

That's cool, a sense of humor is always good. My jimmies can get rustled by people here in the U.S. who try to force their religion or morality on everyone.
User avatar #16 - ghostisaho (06/30/2013) [-]
that is one problem with some americans, and i do suggest you go to canada, or england if you get the chance because places like there just don't give a shit
#40 - chudboy (07/01/2013) [-]
Well they do give a shit. You have people who do shove it down your throats. In the street preaching that you're going to hell and what not. Nobody has the right to tell me I'm going to hell. By christianity's logic, only God can decide.
User avatar #90 - ghostisaho (07/01/2013) [-]
that is true, and therefore i do not tell someone they are going to hell.

"Those people aren't doing what they are doing out of ignorance, they are doing it because of their religious beliefs."
These aren't acts of ignorance then? I know you don't mean that, but it really sounds like you're just out to disagree with me.

"Can you please tell me what would incline a true religious person to become a scientist?" The same thing a non-religious person would; the pursuit of discovery and information around the observable universe. What one would fare of the unknown is determined by religious alignment, refusing to acknowledge the known is ignorance. And of course there's no proof of God; they're beliefs.
Yes I understand Dawkins' point. Thinking a deity controls everything beyond our understanding can interfere with the will to uncover it. I want to think Dawkins wants to openly support the pursuit of science as a constructive counter to this issue, because shaming religion has been will make everyone go nowhere fast. There is nothing to debate about religion.
User avatar #10 - MosKunas (06/10/2013) [-]
I honestly can barely even muster up the energy to waste time answering you.

"There is nothing to debate about religion."

There is actually plenty to debate about religion. And I was hoping that you had a decent understand of how truly screwed up the ideology of religion was, but seeing that you think there is nothing to debate about, I'm realizing I was wrong thinking that about you. I won't argue about science conflicting with religion, because that's obviously a lost cause.

Let me give you a number here:

46% of Americans take the bible literally. Does that not scare you? About half of Americans think the bible is the literal word of the creator of the universe and was all put into a book before there was even a hint of modern science on the planet. So the earth was created around 10,000 years ago, and Adam and Eve were actual existing people. Along with every other story in the bible, 46% of Americans perceive the bible as a history book. I could go on and on about this, but how can you truthfully say to yourself that there is "nothing to debate about."?

That percentage worries me, and it should do the same to you. The stories in the bible would be perceived as crazy talk under the context of anything except religion. But just because it's religion, it receives a buffer. Just like you saying there is nothing to debate about. It's about time we stop saying that religion is above scrutiny, because it is not. Nothing is above scrutiny.
