I'd say it depends. if you had a computer already and you knew that a certian CPU refresh would be out for sure in 7-10 months and could just easily wait, why wouldn't you?

unless the PC you are using is not living up to some expectation, then it isn't paramount to get a new one right then.

I forgot to add. Do you recommend any laptops under $300? I need it to have a decently long battery life and to be lightweight.
User avatar #19090 - Mortuus (10/22/2014) [-]
Chromebooks and such around that price are decent. Most will not be the best for ~$300.

I have no experience with that pricepoint for laptops.
User avatar #19029 - yourbestestfriend (10/21/2014) [-]
Thanks man. For, now, I'm just going to look for a good deal on a cheap laptop before the year ends. I don't plan on buying and PC parts until sometime early next year.
#18996 - No, I tend to stick to FXAA. I meant settings at 1440p.  [+] (1 new reply) 10/21/2014 on Technology Board +1
#18998 - sniffythebird (10/21/2014) [-]
Oh yes.

This is also maxed, except with FXAA. FPS mostly stays between 80 and 100, rarely drops below 70 in heavy action.

Temps would have allowed me to clock higher, but I get artifacts above 1510mhz or so. Not sure how good that is for GTX 980s, but the factory clocks are at 1329mhz boosted, so I'll take it.
#18993 - With two GTX 980s. Because when you own a SWIFT, you might as well.  [+] (4 new replies) 10/21/2014 on Technology Board +1

But some games just bottleneck on the CPU because they can't utilize multi-cores properly.

Crysis absolutely maxed (2560x1600 very high 16xQ AA) often stays at 50-70% on both cards. Tested in a lot of different locations, overclocking the cards does nothing for my FPS. So in this case I can crank up the AA so the FPS is at least more consistent between the CPU bottlenecky areas and the areas where I get that sweet 90%+ usage on both cards. Otherwise I'll have FPS fluctuating between 60 and 140 really fast some times, this even happens in Tomb Raider, despite how amazing the SLI scaling is there.

Still I don't get it. I've had MSI afterburner show ALL my CPU threads' usage, but none of them even go much above 70%, let alone ever having had 100% on a thread. Not sure why, but it seems like a lot of games are crap at utilizing any high end CPU.
User avatar #18994 - sniffythebird (10/21/2014) [-]
Not sure if you mean completely max it or not.

But I tend to prefer FXAA to the heavier types like TXAA and SSAA most times. TXAA does what it's supposed to in smoothing temporal jaggies, but it blurs/smudges the image quality so much I might aswell smear vaseline on my screen. SSAA is neat apart from the huge FPS drop, but for some reason a lot of games have a smoothing filter on it, so nothing actually looks sharper like it's supposed to when the game renders at a higher internal resolution.

I'll probably just stick to FXAA or use DSR when it's supported along with SLI. Also, with the swift, I prefer 90-140 FPS over 60-80 FPS in most cases if I can get it by simply disabling TXAA or any graphical options that for some reason look worse when maxed, because I do notice it's smoother.
