The only reason to kip is if you are doing a dino. Easier to get to the next ledge above/ across if you add the momentum. That or you'll have to massively strong to do a dino without legs. That or get smoother climb ups with extra dino force. Though dinos usually rely on arm strength as well/quick burst of energy.

Outside of that then I would say it's useless.

read my comment above. Kipping is not for strength training. You will gain some strength from doing it, but the purpose of kipping over straight pull ups is to exert the same amount of energy in a shorter time.

because cross fit isn't about strength training, it's about agility and endurance. They're two different things.

This is a bad comparison, but it's like a machine guided bench press vs without the machine. The machine is going to make you stronger in that one isometric position, and no machine is going to make you stronger in more positions. You will have more stability and control over what you're holding. This is a bad comparison because the difference between strength training and cross fit is more complex than that, I'm just trying to get across that they're accomplishing two different things.

If you want to get better at running, do you just to calf raises and expect your time to go down drastically? No, you would actually run. Running will target a lot more muscle groups, as well as having them working in unison whilst testing your endurance. Strength training in each of these muscles would make you much stronger, but would take a lot longer and you would still have to practice using the muscles in unison to do it more efficiently. This is oversimplifying things as well, since running doesn't really require that much coordination. I'm just bad at examples. But I hope I've gotten my point across.

Furthermore, the unkipped muscle up and pullup require GREATER ENDURANCE than kipping. Kipping makes it easier - By a long shot. You're better off training muscle groups that are ACTUALLY going to work together - Your legs should not be working with your shoulders unless you are pushing or lifting. When you lift your body, Ideally you want to have your feet on the wall you are climbing, not kipping.

Comparing crossfit to running is bad - Crossfitters, just like weightlifters, will almost NEVER ever find a situation where their survival relies on the skills they found in the gym. An unguided, unkipped pullup is worth FAR more in the real world than kipped - If you have to kip to complete it, and you can't kip...?

I'm a martial artist, gymnast, rollerblader and freerunner. I've been training all my life in body resistance and skill-based exercises. I've never met a crossfitter who has been able to match my endurance with perfect form, or my outright power without. That's not bragging, that's just what happens when you train your whole life in a very natural way, you get results for a natural situation.

Don't get me wrong, Crossfit is good for many things, but it's primary function is offering people the feeling they've accomplished something when they really haven't. If you have to kip to complete, you can't do it. That's my point.

Myself doing a muscle-up some years ago. Look at how all the power comes from my shoulders, chest and back. No legs, no swingy bullshit.
