Actually, I believe that the Ultramarines were so impressed with the Fire Warriors, that they allowed them to evacuate the planet, before they initiated Exterminauts.

but no, I meant astartes/humans and tau in general. And it makes sense they'd be impressed with the firewarriors. The whole greater good ideology makes for some impressive moral.

They do occasionally get help from the Tau, same with the Eldar.

The Ultramarines helped the Tau against the Tyranids, and they also helped them against the Necrons.

Yup, then they go right back to shooting each other. Kinda wish GW would quit being lazy and expand the Tau lore.

I think a pretty good reason is the fact that they constantly annex or invade Imperial worlds.

I can't remember the name of the Campaign, but the Tau had taken a bunch of Imperial Worlds during, or before the Gothic War/13th Black crusade (Not sure which)

And the Ultramarines on their way to Cadia diverted and kicked them off.

Besides, I think the Imperial has a right to be xenophobic with everything they face.

The Tyranids, Necrons, Orks, Eldar, are each a pretty damn good reason to hate non-humans.

No, I totally understand the xenophobia, just saying it would not hurt to get some help from the Tau. The Imperium may be vast, with unimaginable human and mechanical resources, but their technology and mechanical ability is crumbling. It seems every story I read about them in some way involves recovering some relic that they no longer know how to make and sometimes don't even know how to use. They can't even get production of existing ordinance right from one planet to another (only the Mars pattern Baneblade is fully functional, others have things missing or made inferior). Just sayin.
