No, you are correct. It has nothing to do with the placenta.
Periods are to get rid of the unused egg. Once pregnant, the body stops producing these eggs as there is no use for them.
The nourishment that would normally go towards the eggs now goes towards the baby.

And regarding my comment, I did not mean the period blood. Just the blood in general. Also, the eggs are not produced but released. I think, I'm probably wrong and should have checked first
