The hardware is more than powerful enough to run both PS2 and PS3 games, it is a matter of taking the time to write the software. It takes time and money to make a system backwards compatible and Sony wants to spend neither.

Also, who is bitching that the current generation isn't powerful enough? The reason that they're making the PS4 more powerful than the current gen is because that's what has come to be expected. Every prior console generation has had a significant jump in video (and for a time audio) quality, I'm not sure that anyone would buy a new console if it didn't have some sort of significant improvement.

well think of it this way:
What kind of added cost would be included with making the ps4 backwards compatible.
I'm assuming it's already going to be an expensive piece of equipment, so adding backwards compatibility could take it from being a $400-$600 investment to a $500-$700, and in the world of marketing and business that is a lot.
also what's the necessity of having backwards compatibility? if you have ps2 and ps3 games, you likely have a ps2/3 as well. nearly all consoles only played their games until the xbox 360 and ps3...

believe it or not though, they have not come even close to utilizing all of the PS3s performance levels yet. I find it rather ridiculous that they are already going to be selling another console when this has yet to be done. To me it is just another "new console so spend lots of money on it please" ploy. The only thing that really interests me about it is the Cloud and controller interaction.
