- So are you saying that you won't lose weight if you burn more …
Neil deGrasse Based Science...
It would kind of be like someone saying that the entire field of physics can be explained as just 'every action has an opposite and equal reaction' and saying the conversation ends there. Like yeah sure that's technically true but that is far from the bottom line.
To elaborate on limberlarry's comment to the best of my ability:
You probably will, but not as a direct consequence. When we say a food has X calories, what we really mean is something more like "after metabolized, the body will be able to convert X calories of the chemical potential energy of the food into useful energy." That's a mouthful, hence the shorthand.
"Useful" is vague. There's no "pure" energy your body can convert food into. The closest thing to that is forming ATP, but it doesn't immediately and constantly do that. Rather, you various reserves from which you body can draw to complete their functions. Carbohydrates, for example, are a more immediate form of energy. When you sprint, this is what you're burning. Fats are a more energy dense, long term form. Hard for the body to metabolize, but great if you're out in a cold forest camping for a few days.
Counting calories works because fats are so energy dense. Say you opt for 500 calorie salad instead of the 1000 calorie burger. The burger has a higher calorie count specifically because it contains so much fat, so you chose the less fatty meal. But even if you had 2000 calories worth of salad and your friend(with a similar metabolism) ate 2000 calories of burger every day for a couple weeks, your friend would end up fatter.
Of course you will. But its almost impossible to actually burn more calories than you consume, since a lot of the food energy you eat comes out in your crap or goes to feeding your gut flora
The point is that "calories in vs calories out" while true in principle, is far from the entire story when it comes to nutrition and weightloss
"But its almost impossible to actually burn more calories than you consume"
So what happens if I eat nothing for 3 days and walk 500 miles?
And 500 more?
Then obviously you will be burning more than you consume. But this is horrible and not exactly good for you and certainly not something you could do indefinitely
That's besides the point entirely. You said it was impossible but I just showed you how simple it was to burn more than you consume. And not eating for 3 days really isn't that bad for you.

Ah ha. They're not including the whole deal. Gotcha.
Yeah thats my only point. Its a massively oversimplified way of looking at things and isnt actually that helpful
Can't beat thermodynamics, buddy.
Completely missing the point, but sure
