True communism doesn't work because people don't want it to work. Communism working requires people to work, which is something people don't want to do, so, since there's nobody to enforce the labor rules in true communism, it fails.
In dictatorships posing as communist countries, we see people being put to work, but the people at the top are the only ones seeing any benefit from the work. This is what happens with real-world communism.
