I dunno man.... I'm as much for recreational drugs as anybody. But I heard about this one guy who injected 8 or 9 marijuanas and then died. And he was so overdosed that when they donated his organs to other people, they all either died or got super high and killed themselves.

>All they do
No fucker, but they do DO things like steal monkeys from labs, burn labs down, vandalize construction equipment, ETC. It's not all they do, but since they do it, you are supporting it just as surely as you are supporting any good they do. There are better environmental charities, ones that don't endanger lives and cause property damage to achieve their goals.
#139 - Jowi (08/20/2014) [-]
Well.... Have you thought about the fact that MAYBE he supports those actions?
User avatar #141 - teranin (08/20/2014) [-]
That would make him supporting criminal actions, which is far from philanthropic, which is the whole fucking point of what I said.
#143 - Jowi (08/20/2014) [-]
Philanthropic
"the desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes"
If good is relative to the person that is perceiving it and jokeexplain wants a greener world then surely these actions could fit that definition?

Just because an act is extreme doesn't mean it is wrong. It gathers press coverage and keeps the charity in the public eye. The actions you describe is probably about 0.001% of the stuff that Green Peace does but those actions will garner support from the extreme left, whilst their other campaigns while get support from more neutral environmentalists.
Sometimes if their is an injustice in the world, you have to fight it. And I personally believe that abducting apes and pouring shampoo in their eyes to see if it makes them go blind, is not only and injustice but is fundamentally sick.

I bet their is some action somewhere at some point in history that was violent and bloody and extreme that you support.
Maybe dropping the A-bombs on Japan? Maybe the torture of potential terrorists in Guantanamo Bay? Maybe destruction of ancient tribal lands in Africa so that oil could be drilled from them so you can drive to work in the morning.
Everyone will at some point support an extreme means to promote an end that they feel will benefit society.

So I repeat, shut the fuck up and let the man spend his money where he wants
#146 - teranin (08/20/2014) [-]
Again, if he is using those donations to go to greenpeace, he is supporting crime, vandalism, arson. He may think their cause is good, but since their actions are crimes, he is supporting crime, and as such his actions are not philanthropic. Any violent actions, throughout history that I may support would not be supported due to philanthropy, but rather pragmatism.

Are you saying supporting Greenpeace is pragmatic? Because they are doing nothing but bring ecological work down by their criminal acts. They are actually hurting the cause of a greener world far more than helping it, so it's both as far from pragmatic and philanthropic as you can get.

Donate to the fucking WWF or something if you want to do some good. If you donate to Greenpeace, you're part of the problem, not helping with solutions.
#152 - Jowi (08/20/2014) [-]
Wow, you just glossed completely over what I wrote and basically repeated your last comment. I'm not gonna have like a fifty comment argument with someone who's not even gonna bother answering the questions I pose them
User avatar #169 - teranin (08/20/2014) [-]
I thought that first question was rhetorical. No, his actions would not become philanthropic based on his perceptions, because the actions themselves and their objective consequences are what determines benevolence or malevolence. You can like Pol Pot and, say, have invested money into his regime, thinking it was good, as millions were killed. Does that mean what you did was good?

Some of the worst actions ever conceived have been done with good "intentions". If you'll recall, my original comment stated quite clearly that either he has been "conned into thinking this is good" or "actually supports criminal behavior". This would fall under the first statement, where he has been convinced greenpeace is good even though they are not, which makes donating to them a stupid act, not philanthropic so much as misinformed.

I hope that answers that first question, as to your later one regarding points in history I did in fact answer that in the previous comment.

User avatar #66 - sedativechunk (08/20/2014) [-]
Good, someone on the other side of the fence here, because I love the show despite it's very minor flaws. I just made a comment about that already. TBBT is a great show and the only place I ever see any religious hate for it is on FJ. People rip on it for the stupidest, nitty gritty reasons. I bet at least half the people that bash this show probably didn't even give it a chance.
How many other TV shows out there pay tribute to the science fiction community? They've had guest cameos from James Earl Jones to Leonard Nimoy. What other TV shows even know what the hell "Halo 3" is? What other shows even attempt to go into that territory with video games/comic books/ and the geek life? NONE of them.

The science is just filler material. Some of it's funny and some of it's blatantly inaccurate. That's life. Like you said, they do their best to present this stuff to a mass audience including kids/teenagers who have no idea what string theory is. You have to appreciate and take it for what it is.
One show that got alot of love on Funny Junk that I never understood why is "How I Met Your Mother". I always viewed that as more the female comedy (and maybe there's more females on here than I realize). I personally never liked that show and never got into it. In fact I thought it was total rubbish and never found Neil Patrick Harris the saint people on here made him out to be. I think TBBT is astronomically better than that show, but people on this site have a polar opposite opinion.
#72 - Jowi (08/20/2014) [-]
Ah I have to disagree with you there! I love HIMYM, possibly more than TBBT
User avatar #30 - cyellowan (08/20/2014) [-]
The matter of fact that you actually do watch TV shows disqualify you to pass judgement, if that is even what i can call this, towards this shitty show.
As paul's Ego says, turn of the god dam tube! It is a device that sucks away your time AND brainwash you at the same time.
#34 - Jowi (08/20/2014) [-]
Oh and quoting a YouTube personality about turning of the TV is moronic
#32 - Jowi (08/20/2014) [-]
What... You're telling me that because I watch TV I'm therefore not allowed to pass judgement on which shows are good? That's retarded holmes
Or are you telling me that I'm not allowed to decide it's merit to the scientific world? Which I wasn't doing, I was merely pointing out the hypocrisies of FJ's TBBT bashing and I was saying it may have a positive effect on people wanting to do science, like watching the Moon Landings did in the 60's. It was popular culture to be scientific then and increased people's desire to study and TBBT is pop culture now and MAY do the same.

As for you not watching TV, that's your call. But I've achieved a few things in my life and my decisions to do other stuff wasn't hindered by the fact I watch TV, I just use it as a means to relax after a hard day. Sue me.
And you can hardly talk, you're hear on FJ like the rest of us, spending hours of time reading useless posts that only some have real world applications.
So yeah, you're a hypocrite too. Congratz
I'm not even gonna thumb you down, it would feel like retard bashing

I appreciate your comment, but I doubt it will do anything.
I agree with you on everything, but funnyjunk is just following another bandwagon. Right now, if there's a remotely related post on BBT, it's cool to post how the show is bad. It will get you thumbs. Even if it's been said a thousand times already, and even if it's wrong, people will still post it. And they won't stop until something new to complain about comes.
The show itself is far more entertaining and funny than what people claim. Almost all jokes are more ore less funny. Of course they won't make the whole show funny only if you have an IQ over 150. It's a fucking family show. Just because they're about scientists doesn't mean the jokes have to be smart.
The jokes aren't so repetitive. Bazinga and *knock* *knock* Penny are barely used now. And might I add that, legen wait for it dary, was used at least five times as much, but nobody complains about that.
Now the laugh track, for some reason people have a huge problem with that. Even though most shows use them, rarely someone complains about it. Unless of course it's TBBT. It DOES make the jokes funnier. I fail to see how that's a bad thing. Just like watching something with a bunch of friends is more fun than watching it alone. Removing it would make the show worse, not better in any way.
The only thing I think they messed up is hat they had to find soulmates for every character. Even Sheldon! But I guess they did that to get to the female audience. And they also started focusing a little more on DND, star trek and they even had Professor Proton and Bill Nye on the show. I really hope start focusing more on the "nerd" stuff.

So here, those were the major arguments fj uses why BBT is bad. But someone just pulled those out of their ass and others just copy paste it for thumbs. It wasn't TV's number 1 show for no reason. Now that could be debated, but it surely wouldn't get there if it were as bad as fj says.

Naa bro. New Girl is fucking hilarious. Zoey Deschanel isn't great in it, but the characters Nick, Winston and Schmidt are fucking hilarious.
#15 - iidonteven (08/20/2014) [-]
I thought this too. I'd rather have kids running around thinking they're cool for knowing about Schrodinger's cat than for smoking weed and getting drunk age 10.

The whole point is that it makes the viewer feel smart because relatively complex theories are explained in simple terms, and there are more remedial characters that still don't understand, so the viewer fits in with the intelligent scientists.

That's cool. And I'm not so sure about that. FJ, despite everything, is quite accepting of the more taboo aspects of life. For example there is a delicately named account of faggitboy who is also transgender and is on the **** page who has quite a lot of thumbs from butt-plug related photos and she also posted a picture of herself on that content about posting attractive guys photos to increase the amount of women that come to the site, you may have seen it. Anyway she openly came out as transgender then and all the replies I saw were glowingly positive ranging from "boner what are you doing" to just openly saying "dude, you're ******* hot".
You don't have to do anything as brash as that I'm just saying you don't need to be afraid around here, we're all comrades when it comes down to it. For a lot of us we're the family and friends that we lack in the real world and some of the nicest things I've ever seen have happened on this site.

Anyway all the best with it
