Not really.
Humans are made to invent things for them to survive.
When your species is based on shear physical power you really can't have any weaknesses or you go extinct.
For example, a gorilla is in nearly every way but smarts of coarse, better than us, and doesn't have any real weaknesses.
#669 - Absolute Madman (11/13/2013) [-]
To what would you consider intelligence in terms of a fight though? You say we're not physically strong, sure, but as any good fighter will tell you, it's "how" and "where" you hit, not how strong you are. Does that get disregarded because of lacking physical strength? True, going blow for blow with a chimp would be retarded, but what about cramming your thumbs into it's eye sockets? Graphic, sure, but that's HOW we fight. We fight intelligently. Even if we lack the physical strength, we have the intelligence, and the brutality, to get the job done. Tools or not. We defeat animals, not through technology, but through intelligent brutality. Fighting a wolf, grab a hold of it's leg and snap it. It's the animal in man, rapidly calculating and viciously ruthless. We understand our opponents weakness, and fatally exploit them. Intelligence IS our strength. Just because an animal is stronger or faster, by no means tips the odds in it's favor. Intelligence > Physical

put them outside their known environment, and a gorilla may not perform as well.
say a dumbass gorilla gets lost in a savannah. I believe the gorilla will not last long, because it's "made" for the jungle. other animals may outmaneuver it, because it doesn't have the trees for cover. We perform fairly well on every environment, exept for high mountain, tundra, polar and desert. To sum it up, at the extremes. take us out of our comfort zone, and we won't do badly. put us in an extreme, hostile environment, and very few of us would survive.

If we could roll the all stars from the animal kingdom, then you have a badass species. until then, humans will have to do!

Yes, my point.
But sometimes even the strongest of our species isn't stronger than the average of another species.
User avatar #370 - JoshOwnsAll (09/13/2013) [-]
The AVERAGE of species. we are the all-rounder of the animal kingdom.
maybe the smartest, but we're average on the rest. not very strong, not very fast, etc...
but other animals may be great at something, but I bet it comes with a hard weakness.

To go further, and offer a few arguments...
1. The guns still had decent range but cannot fire past 20 or more miles inland, rendering them ineffective at direct fire missions, which missiles are more than capable of.
2. Bigger boats would have more armor, which allows them to sustain more of a beating, stealth technology could render them more difficult to hit.
3. New props and propulsion systems could fix it a little but your statement still holds true. Naval battles don't really happen anymore and maneuverability doesn't really matter with guided missiles, ships cannot outrun them.
4. This is true, but Carriers are more massive than Battleships, and Nuclear Reactors exist that can power them for 30+ years giving them infinite range.

Battleships still kind of exist, but they're classified by the United States as Heavy Cruisers. I wish that Battlewagons still existed and we could build ships designed for brute for and size, but modern warfare demands accuracy and precision that smaller, faster cruisers, frigates, and destroyers can better deliver.

Think it's because they were supposedly obsolete. The carriers had enough bombing power and distance to kill off Iowa classes. Not even close to a fair fight.
User avatar #36 - mrblueftw (09/06/2013) [-]
I still think we should have 1 big battleship. They were more of moral weapons then actual weapons. The Vietcong abandoned some battles after the Iowa was put into the war and they saw it.
User avatar #19 - okamiterasu (09/06/2013) [-]
It's really hard to successfully maneuver a battle cruiser through the back streets of a small desert village
User avatar #9 - Onemanretardpack (09/06/2013) [-]
Destroyers have missiles, which are better than the fuckhueg guns on cruisers. And they're also smaller and much faster and easier to man
User avatar #42 - JoshOwnsAll (09/06/2013) [-]
you have to admit that the 50mm smart cannons mounted on destroyers and whatnot aren't as awesome as a 460mm cannon. and, why the fuck not mount 3 of them in a single turret?!
User avatar #175 - Onemanretardpack (09/07/2013) [-]
I'm not gonna lie, WW2 cruisers with those huge cannons give me a massive erection
#6 - slias (09/06/2013) [-]
They're just too big to be effective at naval combat, also more expensive to maintain.
User avatar #24 - turdburgalar (09/06/2013) [-]
Not to mention slow as hell, the ships we have nowadays are like fucking daggers.
User avatar #7 - JoshOwnsAll (09/06/2013) [-]
it was more of a rethorical question, they have lots of downsides:
1) 460mm guns are no longer needed, missiles have longer range, better accuracy, and damage.
2) bigger boat, easier to hit
3) big boats tend to be slow and need lots of space and time to move
4) large, heavy ships need large, heavy engines. (The modern-day Oasis of the seas uses about 1 gallon of diesel per meter travelled, imagine how much did a WWII big-ass battleship used)
User avatar #21 - IamWhoIam (09/06/2013) [-]

Death would not be immediate given a 1 microgram dosage, but it would be certain, as was already true.

I'm pretty sure that we would have time to have some healthy babies without those plutonium particles in their lungs, and I'm sure that large animals would be relatively unaffected by the plutonium, so we could use those large animals as food sources.

I am unsure how resilient most plants are to plutonium, that would be the deciding factor.
