To put it simply, it's working out turned into a sport.

At the last half of the class, after warming up, doing mobility and strength training, you're given a WOD (Workout of the day). Every single day is different, you will never see the same WOD twice. You can be given anything from burpees, ring dips, push ups, pull ups, presses, deadlifts..you name it. You're usually given a time limit, which is generally 15 minutes, so you're going HARD for that amount of time.

It's great for beginners because they teach you EVERYTHING you need to know about working out.

The other great thing is that you're working alongside other people from all levels of fitness, so you always have that extra motivation.

Good sources of complex carbs:
Whole Grains
Veggies - Broccolli seems to be the crowd favourite. I personally like spinach, but whatever.
Sweet Potato - I fucking hate sweet potato
Brown Rice - I try to eat at least 4 cups of prepared brown rice per day, during work days.

Refined carbs are great after workouts. I'm still trying to fully figure out why, but it has something to do with spiking insulin levels, which basically "open up the gates" to your muscles, and allows the glucose from carbs and the amino acids from protein to get absorbed by the muscles.

You'll typically want to eat double the amount of carbs than protein post workout.

Anyways, good sources of LEAN protein:

Round Steak

Chicken Breast

Pork Tenderloin

0% Greek Yoghurt <I suggest this. It's VERY filling, and once you can get past the taste, you actually start to like it. It's also really really really good for your immune system.

Protein Powder - I would only take these after workouts because they go through your body faster. Eating any of the above items after a workout slows digestion, and because of the way your body works in post-workout mode, that's the last thing you want to do. Go to your local supplement store, forget the grocery store shit.

If you're really uneducated and you want to start fresh..Hear me out on this.

Join a crossfit league. Don't believe all the bullshit the internet tells you. It's an amazing workout for your body and burns fat like a motherfucker. The picture above is me after 7-8 months of crossfitting.

Crossfitting gets you into the right mindset. And once you start loving it and going everyday, and getting good at it, you'll have the confidence to walk into the gym and do anything, and have the confidence to ask people how they got to where they are.
