True True. The thing about more parties is you usually you end with more grid lock as it is harder to get a majority for parties. A dictatorship is the best in doing change. Next to follow would be the two party system, a majority and a minority. Finally would be the multiple divisions of parties of n.

For governments that encourage multiple parties, you'd either have to do legislation with a 51% vote( very unlikely with many parties and ideologies ) or the party with the most votes( you could effectively have a party with 12% of the votes control the rest of the 88% of the country because they had the largest votes as compared to the other parties ).

Also independent parties do have quite the power today. They may not have power such that they hold seats or can even find their way on the presidential election( the winner take all system for the electoral college does well in stamping them out ), but the main parties do use third parties as a way to see how the people are doing and where they should lean towards to get more voters( a party with 75% lovers could easily rub off some of their ideals on both parties ).

Also finally, the two parties help curb the radicalness of Americans. This is what keeps us from blindly running around trying to do everything because the party in power wants to get rid of taxes and the next party in power wants to invade Poland and the one after that wants to make pot legal...

That's all I had to say. I hope I wasn't too clueless in anything I said... I took AP Gov and gawd did I not learn anything.

Actually not many people blindly follow their parties like they used to fifty years ago thanks to the advent of the internet and computer which allows the transaction of information around the world in fractions of a second.

Parties have been losing power for a while and right now are most likely at their weakest.
User avatar #151 - JesuschristofAZ (06/23/2013) [-]
Well this was a shot more so intended at the uniformed masses that identify with certain parties because they agree with them on one thing. We live in the age with absolute information inundation, but people don't utilize the information at their hands. A lot more people are more educated on politics in comparison to decades prior, but there are still too many people that don't take the time to make educated decisions.

I like the fact two-party politics are slowly dying. A third party is on the verge of rising, the voices of independents are gaining power.
