i once did sleep paralysis. it was the scariest thing i had ever done and i had to speak to a psychiatrist because i was frightened of closing my eyes in case i relived that one night. it felt like a child was sat on my chest, i could breath but had to put in a little more effort for a little less breath, not quite needing to gasp but not getting enough air. i tried to lift my arm to pinch myself, check if i was asleep, and i couldn't. i have a bunk bed and i heard noises of someone climbing the ladder but i couldn't check to see if there was anything there. i still have trouble sleeping.... never do sleep paralysis

You can wake up from sleep paralyzis by trying to move your toes or swallow. What you're doing is tricking the brain into thinking you're sleeping. The brain automatically "shuts off" the biggest muscles, so you wont hurt yourself in your sleep. But smaller parts of the body, like the toes, can still be moved, and moving them may wake you up. Swallowing too, because your brain knows it's something you do when awake, and therefore stops the paralyzis. Just thought I should say that, hope it helped.

Oh, and here's another reason why I'll never be able to lucid dream:
Do not watch pornographic material before going to sleep, it will keep you from focusing on your dreams.

I think that's sleep paralyzis. I think anyone can achieve it by laying still, not moving a muscle for 30 minutes or so. It's like a horror version of lucid dreaming. You dream, and you're awake, but unable to move while you experience morbid stuff. I guess you have a less creepy sleep paralyzis thing. The only reason why I don't try lucid dreaming is because of fear of going into the paralyzis state.
User avatar #7 - Ironicide (06/16/2012) [-]
i think you're right either way, i feel like a slowly suffocate because when you're asleep, you breathing is a lot slower, but my mind says i need to breath faster so i panic :/

pretty sure aang has no memories of his parents getting killed. also, "soul bending" sounds a bit too farfetched, just saying.

I'm going with more of the whole "he only touches the mind chakra which is blocked by illusion." thing, but honestly idk why he has to be related to aang or be using trickery. Taking away another's bending does not require traditional bending, and is technically a skill that anyone could aquire. Obviously the avatar has a natural advantage in learning such a thing with their naturally higher connection to the spirit world and the help of hundreds of past lives, but just because Aang is the inly person in recorded history to do so doesn't mean noone else has done it or that noone else can.

No, that is the dumbest theory yet.
User avatar #19 - vortexrain (06/16/2012) [-]
In an anime aimed at only older people this would be plausible, but it's aimed at younger people as well, so it would get into so much detail as physical and spiritual chi, undead, and the manipulation of a soul.

Avatar doesn't quite seem like the kind of show to include people who could be classed as 'un-dead' and it was the avatar state, not Aang that withstood blood bending.
