Idiom

1.
an expression whose meaning is not predictable from the usual meanings of its constituent elements, as kick the bucket or hang one's head, or from the general grammatical rules of a language, as the table round for the round table, and that is not a constituent of a larger expression of like characteristics.
2.
a language, dialect, or style of speaking peculiar to a people.

I dont care if he died, doesnt affect me in anyway, and as far as im concerned much more important people have died recently than him. He's known for acting and doing cocaine.

You're not going to win, you're not right, and i'm completely calm.

Like i said keep trying.

The difference between saying "kick the bucket" and saying that you "could care less" is that the first one has nothing do with it's meaning, whereas the second one has everything to do with it's meaning, it just means the opposite. It's not an idiom.

"Much more important people have died recently than him. He's known for acting and doing cocaine."

And you accuse me of being confrontational? You're saying all this crap on an "R.I.P Robbin Williams" post.

By the way, I've never heard anyone who is legitimately calm say "I'm completely calm".

lol you're retarded, quit fighting it, people say it all the time. That makes it an idiom.

"People say it all the time."

Yeah, In America. The rest of the world laughs at how stupid it is.

"That makes it an idiom."

No, it doesn't. It's closer to being sarcastic than idiomatic, but seeing as how you're being genuine when you say it, it's not sarcasm either.

It really is just pure dumb.

Keep trying bro, you're not gonna make me mad. You know damn well its a turn of phrase, and you're just being confrontational about it cause being an ass to people you dont know on the internet gives your willy a little movement.
User avatar #551 - HonkIfIDriveWell (08/12/2014) [-]
No, it's not a turn of phrase or an idiom. It's just wrong. Unless, of course, you follow it with something like "but not by much". Then you're at least still keeping your meaning mostly intact.

Furthermore, by saying that you don't care about Robin Williams dying, you're the one being an ass. If anything, I'm throwing you a bone by letting you know that you actually said the opposite.

In my experience the only ones that actually take down attendance are the graduate students that teach classes. Most professors either have participation, in-class assignments, or just cut people more slack grade-wise if they see them in class every day. I don't know about anywhere else, but at my university it seems like most professors are pretty cool as long as you show them the respect that they deserve.

I'd want to see them in my class every day, personally. It's a matter of respect; if the professor can show up and give the lecture every class day, the student should show up and listen to the lecture every day as well. Not showing up gives off the impression that you don't care about either the class, the professor, or both. And if I was a professor in that situation, I wouldn't care about your grade since you don't care about the class.

I don't necessarily like the idea of taking attendance, but I wholeheartedly support making participation a part of your grade. That helps with your communication skills as well, and encourages people who would normally skip class to attend. I think that's the main thing, is that taking attendance means that the people who don't understand the importance of showing up to class may still gain the benefits of being there since they don't have much of a choice, and maybe they'll begin to understand why it's important. Though it hasn't seemed to work considering how many people on here agree with OP.

Basically, as a teacher you wouldn't want their grade to suffer unnecessarily, and you would want them to realize the importance of attending class. So from that perspective it makes sense that they would do what they can to make sure you show up to class.
User avatar #282 - HonkIfIDriveWell (08/01/2014) [-]
It seems like a lazy way to go about it. Why not mark students on how well they participate while they're there, instead of just how often they show up. Quality over quantity, you know?

It's possible someone could see it and at least start to think about how they've been doing things.
