I'm straight, mixed race, from the US
Im not proud to be American
Im not proud to be straight
Im not proud to be white, black, asian
Im not proud to have Japanese, Cherokee, Irish heritage
I've always said be proud of what you've done and only you
Black people are all always going about saying "Im proud to be black" because they feel oppressed
And then the white people see this and get enraged that they cant say that, but they then say "Im proud to be white, white people have done so much and have done so many great things Im so proud to be white." And what I have to say to both of them is shut the fuck up. If you havent done anything great in your life then dont be proud of what your ancestors say. People always say "Dont be racist towards me because my ancestors did something to your ancestors a long time ago" then they go around saying they are proud of what their ancestors have done.
tl:dr I agree and dont be proud of stuff you didnt do because you havent done jack shit
tl;dr;dr Dont be proud of what others do
tl;dr;dr;dr People are fucking idiots

As a gay person, I can tell you that the pride isn't in being gay. The pride is in overcoming adversity and having the courage to be out of the closet. For the most part, flamboyantly gay men and butch lesbians aren't being such for attention, it just happens to be a part of their identity. I feel very uncomfortable with long hair and dresses; I keep it cut short and wear jeans and t shirts. It's identity, not to upset the general public. It's like saying that metalheads can listen to what they want, but they can't flaunt it in a shirt. You don't choose your preferences, but you can display them.

Coming to terms with it, and accepting it is the reason behind pride, as well as to inspire those who have not yet come to terms with it.
Many people are driven to suicide which is because they are ashamed of it. Being ashamed could be an antonym of pride. Though I disagree with the way "Pride" is dealt with, i.e. those gross naked people swingin' their lil dicks and saggy tit's about, but I feel that pride in this manner is a way of allowing people to say "Hey, that guy's okay with it, maybe those who hate on me aren't right, maybe i'm not a horrible person, maybe I can be proud of myself too.

Listen up, fuckwits.
They act like that during pride parades because it is literally the only time they can act as flamboyant and over the top as they want. Otherwise, they can get beaten up or killed just because of their sexuality.
They're proud because being gay is difficult and despite the handicap, they're doing pretty well with themselves.

Dude, I understand your point but it's not that simple. I believe the whole 'proud' thing just stand for the fact that the majority of the gay community in conservatice countries gets mocked on and also has their rights deprived. I don't see how saying "I'm proud to be gay" is wrong, just as someone would say (examplg given) "I'm proud to be a canadian". You never heard the phrase "I'm proud of who I am"? I think the phrase simply refers to the fact that they're proud of who they are in a sense that they make no apologies for who they are.
I understand the frustration of people with gay pride parades though. Many fairly open-minded people argue that parades should be banned. Well don't forget that gay people are human-beings that have their rights stolen and they parade because they claim what they deserve by simply being born.
However, I do agree that often enough things get out of control

ehrm... did you mean not proud of it, or as it was said?
#35 - anonymous (07/19/2013) [-]
The gay pride movement is very important to young homosexuals who often feel ashamed of their sexuality and in a lot of cases develop depressions and other mental problems because they see their sexual orientation as wrong or unnatural. Helping them to be proud of it can of course lead to them becoming overly flamboyant, but that is usually just a phaseand still way better than alcohokism, drug abouse or suicide.

Well here's the thing, society through out the history, as giving the image that being gay or bi is bad thing, and pictured as a shameful thing to be. And thus a lot of discrimination and violence has been dealt towards them. Even now people are still afraid of coming out of the closet, in fear that thier family will disowned them and friendships torn apart. Thus LGBT pride was made.
