Caesar spread the modern way of life of Rome and it's ideas further than any Roman leader had done before. If it wasn't for him the world today would be a very different place. Scandinavia might have been a complete shithole for example.

I wouldn't call him an asshole, to his people he was a savior and a great leader who brought the mongolian tribes together to stand up against the chinese oppression. And then he kinda went a little overboard...

Caesar was probably one of the greatest leaders in human history. He conquered a lot of territories, but imperialism is not a crime against humanity. He treated his people well, and even freed the slave of someone he knew after he discovered that the slave was abused. In terms of leaders at the time, he was probably one of the most compassionate, even if he needed to be harsh sometimes.

He assassinated his political rivals and overthrew a longstanding republic by force, by today's standards he would've been labeled a terrorist.

By today's standards, just about any political practice employed by the romans would have been considered terrorism. These people were fighting pagans who used ritual sacrifice as a part of their religious rights, you can't really compare them. Besides, the only people who did anything wrong were the ones who stabbed Caesar in the Senate. While assassinations were considered immoral, to use violence on the floor of the Senate was considered barbaric if not outright evil.
I'm also fairly certain you're thinking of Augustus Caesar, as Julius died long before the formation of the Roman Empire.

Hitler was probably one of the greatest leaders in human history. He conquered a lot of territories, but fascism is not a crime against humanity. He treated his people well, and people didn't own slaves under his rule. In terms of leaders at the time, he was probably one of the most compassionate, even if he needed to be harsh sometimes.
