Hitler thought it was a good thing to kill all Jews, he thought it would make a better world.

A lot of people disagreed with that and thought it was immoral to do that.

In killing jews,
Hitler = yes
Others = no

There's no set rules of right and wrong, there won't be a situation where every being agrees on something. Someone's Good Things are another's Bad Things. That's why laws are always in debate, being removed and added.

I'll check out the systems in guild wars 2. And for the level of depth in item crafting I want to make it as indepth as I can think of. So those ideas you just stated I'll probably implement. Thanks for your opinions though =^) they'll definitely impact my mindset on the item system.

Have you ever played Diablo 3? That is the kind of idea I'll probably go with as it's style can be placed in major towns / areas. But with that being said I think I'm going to focus A LOT of time onto followers so I plan on having a follower that can repair(sort of like Fallout games there was a decent amount of time given on the followers.), I love the idea of having a person travel with you and express their opinions on in-game activities / going-ons.

The game is going to be set in a sort of ye-olde backwash with higher-tech weaponry/technology so I plan on having followers that allow the player to either

1. Teleport to different areas (maybe using technology or magic, probably going to go with technology).
2. On-the-fly risk assessment and number cruncher that give the player statistics of how well they can do against enemies.
3. Repair anywhere(like I previously said)
4. Various combat abilities and or boosts.
5. Lore driven characters that are like followers that do nothing and do not take up a follower slot. (More emersion in the game)
6. ???

I haven't got many because I'm spending time creating the features of these followers before moving onto others.
#43 - quatre (04/16/2014) [-]
i'm willing to weigh in, but have a question or two first: are the followers offering the character items 1-4 of your list, or are those game mechanics separate from followers?
User avatar #45 - mothertrollbegood (04/16/2014) [-]
They're follower mechanics. Say for teleporting

1. There will be the ability to teleport apart from having the follower (To mostly major cities/areas)
2. The followers allow for dynamic teleportation, allowing the player to set an area to teleport back to. Say if they want to sell some loot or need to purchase some items while they're out from a major city. Apart from that machanic the follower will allow the player to teleport to different areas other than large cities.

Intredasting indeed. I like the idea but, with the info in front of me, I'm seeing a problem with the execution.
As I see it, you're defining the roles of the roles of the followers too simply and a little scattered. In an RPG (hack-n-slash diablo or immersive elderscrolls) why choose a repairman follower over a party buffer, or attacker? They all need to have some offensive trait, some defensive trait, and a unique trait. That way, no follower is game-breaking, only play-style changing.

1. Have a offensive+defensive magician that can teleport you around.
2. Have a tech-savvy sniper class with tactical traps that can give you enemy info/risk.
3. Have a heavy-hitter melee brawler that lets you upgrade/scrap equipment.
4. Have a jack-of-all trades (master of none) follower that may not have a unique or may need further defining from you (the game developer).

as for mechanics:
teleportation is a sore thumb.
for followers:
1) If you're going for elder scrolls vibe, it can take away from immersion. Give it a daily limit, and/or radius limitation.
2) If you're going for a diablo vibe, it can take away the danger. Give it a steep casting time or a requirement of being a distance from active enemies.
as a general mechanic:
I liked how Morrowind did it: a pay-taxi system between towns for early game, a teleport spell for mid and late game, and a dungeon waypoint network unlocked optionally for late game. This isn't as feesible in a diablo style game, though.

on item repair:
the repair mechanic as it is in in diablo or morrowind is outdated in my opinion. it's boring, doesn't add immersion by today's standards, and is only implemented to balance an economy of a bad loot system. I'd rather see a weapon/armor system that can be sharpened/reinforced to different levels by a blacksmith, boosting base stats. Then have it wear to a neutral and an eventual rusted/dented condition. Let the player always be able to return an item to neutral if they have the scrap parts for it.

On your last point is what I'm intending on doing. I'm thinking of individual weapon aspect repair/upgrades. Say for a gun that has awesome fire rate, decent accuracy but really shitty damage, the player can upgrade the barrel to increase the damage of the weapon. However, with this I'm unsure on how the repair function would coincide with this upgrade system but I'll find a way.

I like the idea of more broad followers, where there is a trade off for using a different follower from another, so as you said there needs to be balance between them and have them suit people's play styles effectively.

Teleporting can be difficult to make balanced, depending on how big the playing world is, changes how good teleporting can be. With the exception of big city teleports the play would normally have to walk around to get to places/farming areas (lots of enemies to kill, etc). So I want to be able to integrate a teleporting system that the player can use to get to an area, do their thing then have the ability to leave again (Say a 2.5-5 minute cooldown, or a 10 minute cooldown for really far away places that can have cooldown reduced by various activities).

User avatar #41 - HAMMATIMEZ (04/16/2014) [-]
Yeah I have got D3 and yeah I think the repair works well in that type of game.
Also, maybe a personal item (maybe even a profession if you're going to that depth (eg. armorsmith, leatherworker, tailor, etc.) ).
Or if not that, maybe just a straight up smithing for everything (like skyrim) that can repair their own/other people's gear on the fly with purchasable tools could be something. You could buy a single-use (or w/e you want) repair kit that can repair all/one piece of your armor (could break it down to even further depth by making less expensive ones repair a smaller percentage than the more expensive counterpart). Or just put that all onto a follower like the blacksmith in diablo 3.

If you do make it so you have to go back to a safe town to repair, make it so you can get back to the spot you left quickly and easily, like the portals from diablo.

For teleporting to different areas, look into guild wars 2 waypoints. IMO, it's a very nice system to get around the world. The only other thing I can think of at the moment is when you make characters/followers, go through a list of their personality traits and history to make sure it fits what you wrote for the story.
