It was much less a retaliation to Pearl Harbor as it was a quick way to end the war. It did end up saving total lives (it was estimated 250,000 American Soldiers would have died, not to mention many more Japanesse Soldiers before the war would be over.) Japan was given time to Surrender before the first and second nuke, but they did not. I DO think we should have attacked military bases instead of civilians and that Japan would have seen the extent of our power without harming innocent civilians, but what's done is done.

And nobody talks about 9/11 anymore except on the internet.

Oh please,

you should know that you are safe now, and whatever our military does there will be a tomorrow. Thats why now we focus on how little collateral damage our weapons do.

Back in the 1940's, we were fighting for our lives, back then we cared about how much damage our weapons did.

dude, get your facts straight.
the first nuke (the hiroshima one) was thrown on 6/8/1945.
the emperor of japan had signed and sent the official capitulation on 3/8/1945.
it was written in a japanese dialect that the US translators didnt understand.
so, yep, it was not the USAs fault that the bombs were thrown.. but saying that it would have saved lives or that japan would have continued is just dumb then.
User avatar #95 - GhandisPimpCane (02/16/2012) [-]
When did the Japanese military sign a surrender though? If i remember correctly the Emperor wanted to end the war but the Military was acting separately. And by saving lives I mean only a hundred thousand died, instead of millions of American troops and millions of civilian livesthat would have happened in an invasion scenario. How could they not translate the dialect though they had many translators?

Not to be an smart ass but Hiroshima and Nagasaki where industrial cities that produced tanks, air planes, and guns. It wasn't just senseless killing but you were right that it was good in the long run and saved thousands of Amer.ican and Japanese lives. If we didn't bomb japan and had asked them to surrender, they would not have and we would have had to invade which, as you know, would have costed many more lives than just nuking those two cities. To address what "infer" said about the u.s. attacking Germany first ... you are a fucking retard. When the Roosevelt adopted the lend-lease act to send britfat military aid , Hitler was sending U-boat wolf packs to the north Atlantic to take out ships sending to supplies to britfat, that and Hitler knew he shouldn't declare war on the u.s yet but, being an ally of japan was almost forced to declare war when the u.s was attacked at pearl harbor
User avatar #429 - switchy (02/16/2012) [-]
Abso-fucking-lutely. Does everyone forget that we were at WAR with Japan? The bombs weren't for fucking shits and giggles. Dropping the bombs was the toughest decision of the Pacific portion of the war - regardless of if it was right.

America had to end the war ASAP. I can't believe people think an INVASION UNTIL SUBMISSION would lead to less civilian deaths than two bombs. As you said, the brainwashed civilians would have attacked U.S invaders mercilessly, and then reporters turn it into a war crime when the soldiers fight back.

dafuq dude? Japan attacked a military base of yours and you used NUCLEAR BOMBS on cities without any fuckin military ground on them. While in Pearl Harbor, there were 2403 killed (only aproximately ofcourse), the bodys on the japanese site were - depending on sources - between 150.000 and 300.000 - about 100 times as much (!).

oh and to get back to that poster, 3000 people died on 9/11. ofcourse there is no way to make up to what happend on 9/11 and ofcourse i do not want to hurt any ones feelings but there is no way you can compare or reason hiroshima/nagasaki on pearl harbor. and btw you attacked germany first and germany and japan were allies. you must have known that.

and to say something more, i am german and there is no way i can thank amerifats enough for getting rid of the NS regime in germany, and there is no way to justify anything the japanese or the german government did during these times. but thats still the government, not the civilians. no nation with any respect to itself and to human rights should attack civilians, not even the US.

I don't think America attacked first. I was informed that Germany sank an amerifat ship bringing supplies to britfat or France.

I salute you infer.
User avatar #242 - Viggiator (02/16/2012) [-]
And just to be clear, I don't hate USA and what happend 11th September 2001 was terrible and can never be justified, so if anyone took offence I didn't mean that. Just that war isn't a very good solution to problems in my opinion.
User avatar #86 - GhandisPimpCane (02/16/2012) [-]
I agree they should have attacked military sites but they didn't. However, do you know the war crimes committed by the Japanese during World War II? A nuclear explosion was more humane than what the Japanese did to civilians in neighboring asian countries. China has hundreds of massacres.
We also did not attack Germany first. America was brought into the war because of Pearl Harbor. We initial attacked Normandy first because America thought Hitler was more important to take down first. Don't know were you got America attacking Germany first.

All civilians in Japan were brain washed in following their holy emperor and would fight to that last woman and child to prevent losing the war. You can see this in many videos of them preparing for the American invasion. If we had sent in troops casualty reports were predicted to be in the millions for both sides.
User avatar #602 - McorncakeM (02/16/2012) [-]
