| We had an Isolationist doctrine for a century or so (Monroe Doctrine(not counting WWI)) but Roosevelt wanted into WWII so bad he could taste it. He even searched for ways to encourage Japan to attack us (look up McCollum's Memo) and then followed these to a tee. Sadly, it is believed that we knew they were coming - we'd cracked their most recent encryptions and just three months before the Pearl Harbor attack the Red Cross in Hawai'i ordered 40,000 body bags. Roosevelt was a war criminal, yet we revere him as one of the finest American leaders ever. I know it may seem a complete switch from my previous statements - but I believe the retaliation was as just as an act of violence can be - but it never should have happened in the first place. Hitler and the Japanese did not want a fight with America at the point at which they got it (at least Hitler did not). Russia may well have drug out the frozen northern battles so long as to cause Hitler's strange organization to fall into disarray and defeat after all. I could see that. I mean America at the time could be viewed as an aggressor to the Japanese and Germans. We crated embargoes and really screwed up Japan in withdrawing oil i believe and stopped buying their goods. Plus we were selling arms and supplies to our allies like crazy. Russia is just Russia they give no fucks. honestly i think they could have won the war by themselves but it would have been a lot longer and the Germans might have made their atomic weapon. | ||

N. Korean citizen (06/09/2012) [-] the bombs exploded some couple of thousand feet above surface, spread of radiation form the fallout would've not been affected by the shape of the city. I guess you could say Pearl Harbor lead to hiroshima and nagasaki but mainly I think the race war between Germany and the US for getting the weapon in general lead to the bombing. If Germany hadn't persued the project, Einstein would've never have wrote the letter to Eisenhower for a weapon based around his infamous theory of relativity. Atleastyoutried.jpg Is it worth pointing out that during the '70s and '80s Sadam was the golden boy of the West, and it was only when he began to jeopardise some of the West's oil supply with the invasion of Kuwait that the West turned against him? Killing hundreds of thousands of his own civilians was fine, invading Iran was fine, and it was only when he dared to invade a small nation that exported oil to the West that they turned against him. As bad a leader as he was, Joseph de Maistre once said "Every Nation has the government it deserves;" meaning that a fascist or tyrannical regime should only ever be defeated in a revolution - it's not for other Nations to get involved with. Likewise, it was originally the US that armed the Taliban to fight against the Soviets. During the Afghan Civil War, when the Taliban encircled the legitimate and democratic government, when Afghans asked for help, the US did nothing. When the US invaded in 2001, the Taliban were already on the verge of being deposed, and the US invasion made the situation worse. To even the staunchest Afghan enemy of the Taliban, or even just a shepherd on the hills, when they saw the USAF carpet bombing villages and indiscriminantly arresting people without evidence they saw it as an occupation and began to ally with the Taliban. Now, after ten years, several thousand Coalition deaths, tens of thousands of Afghan civilian deaths, millions being made homeless and displaced and tens of billions of Dollars being squandered on the war, the Taliban are in a stronger position than they were in 2001, and only have to wait for the US to pull out at the end of the year before they'll be back in power, more powerful than ever before. Personally I like America; I've been there several times, have family over there and if I manage to become a doctor I'd like to live over there, but the whole Foreign Relations of the country are incredibly fucked up and hypocritical. Indeed I personally would like to see America adopt an isolationist stance on things but because how interconnected the world is we can not do that. The Middle East will always be a contention spot though since our main energy source comes from oil. Once the wells are depleted and we find a better source the world will not care for that area as much as it does now. I like the Joseph de Maistre quote and totally agree if all our nations did not impact each other in such ways to cause economic and social down turn.
