| How are you defining "matriarchal", whats the criteria you're going by? Because the Mosuo actually define themselves as a matriarchal society. That they reckon kinship through the female line (matrilineality) only serves to underscore the fact that women are the household heads and hold economic authority in their families. Polyandry (one women having multiple husbands) is also very common among the Mosuo and women rarely choose to let their husbands settle in their households, which again, hold familial and economic authority. | ||

kaimera (12/01/2015) [-] The vikings. The wife was in charge of the property and money, and made all of the decisions at home. Women were also thought to be magic, and so the men respected them all deeply. The men were in charge of everything outside their homes, like traiding, farming, pillaging etc. So men respected them so deeply that they would kidnap them from their homes? That they would rape them? That's not a fucking matriarchy bro it's not even close. Again they fucking kidnapped them from villages that isn't what a matriarchy is, for that matter the women weren't in charge of the society itself This is probably the most well known example of a matriarchal society in the world today: www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbzG0n3shTM Sorry, but the Mosuo are a matrilinear society (you could argue that they do have aspects of matriarchy, but at most they could be considered a mix up of both). They are presented as matriarchal for the same reason that little "African statuettes" are made the way they are made: it's good for commerce and tourism How are you defining "matriarchal", whats the criteria you're going by? | Buy the guy's definition, it means landing an army there as an act of war, be it in an attempt to colonize, oust current leaders, etc. Britain did just that on a few occasions fighting for portugal independance from spain, landing armies and blockading the current Spanish government there, and sent armies into Portugal during the peninsular war, again ousting french-supporting-spanish rule. Found this after a minute of digging, i.e. googling shit. I guess if you have more qualms, you could buy the book, which was kind of written to answer questions like that.
