I haven't played 1 or 2, but if you can, pick up both FO3: GOTY and NV Ultimate edition. Should only set you back $35 or $40 bucks, but they're both great games. I was sick as a dog half the summer and NV kept me occupied.

In all seriousness however Fallout 3 has a better story than New Vegas' you feel more connected to it. New Vegas however did have a better variety of guns and side quests but due to the lack of a connect with an emotional main story interest can fall off without it.

Fallout 3 is one of the best games ever made, in my humble opinion. Also if you're going to get it get the game of the year edition. It was the first one I played, so no I wouldn't say you need to play them in order.
