User avatar #79 - kaoknight (05/21/2013) [-]
I always hated that nintendo does this and most of their fans dont seem notice this. The fact that they make two different version that are virtually the same game then makes a sequel a few years later like platinum & emerald that has a minor add-on and people buy this game again and again...
User avatar #192 - guymandude (05/22/2013) [-]
I have finally reached the age where my thrifty-ness outweighs my "I want to play it right now"-yness, and I just wait until the "director's cut" version (emerald, crystal, etc) comes out and buy that. Unfortunately, I reached this stage for platinum, but none of the other games have had the special "combo" version since...
User avatar #199 - kaoknight (05/22/2013) [-]
the "director's cut version"(which now could've been a dlc instead of another full price game) usually comes out 3 years averagely after the first one.

I usually only played the first game, i never really cared much for the minor update the directors cut version had. When I tell some fans that games like Ruby-to-emerald and black-to-black2 arent that differnt but they adamantly deny and defend it with their lives.
User avatar #313 - guymandude (05/22/2013) [-]
Well, my opinion is that while the earlier versions may not be too different from the later version, the later one (like emerald) always has content from both of the other games as well as some amount, no matter how minuscule, of new content. So if one has the option, there is no point in getting, say, Ruby over Emerald.

I haven't tried black and white or their sequels, but those games have thrown my system for a loop. Instead of making some "director's cut" type game, they came out with 2 new ones - and now I have no idea if I should buy both black/white and black2/white2 or not. I think that Nintendo must have discovered that people like me just like getting the updated versions, and decided to end that possibility (which is probably why they wouldn't re-release crystal, only Heartgold and Soulsilver).

That being said, there's no way that they would make new Pokemon games called X and Y without planning to make a Z.
User avatar #314 - kaoknight (05/22/2013) [-]
the fans believe that nintendo/gamefreak made the black and white 2 instead of the "gray" version that everyone wanted because nintendo wanted to try something different. but the truth is that making a director cut with 2 versions again is a blatant money grab.

User avatar #315 - guymandude (05/22/2013) [-]
Still, Black 2 & White 2 are different from the other directors cut games in that it is actually a direct sequel, and not just newer versions of the originals (at least a s far as I know from Wikipedia).
User avatar #316 - kaoknight (05/22/2013) [-]
yeah, i have to give it a little credit for the few big changes the game had. I think they changed a few gym leaders, added a few new routes, you start of in a different area with a different sprite character..that pretty much the only difference with this game and the other director cuts.

But in my opinion(not in the fans), i don't like paying full price to replay another gen all over again.but a lot of fan collect these cartridges and will re-buy them all.

I agree most will chose a directors cut over the "normal" version but the director's take about 3 year(averagely) later to come out, i'm not in a rush to play this but if I just wanted to getit over with I'd buy the first version.
User avatar #104 - makotoitou (05/22/2013) [-]
Everyone knows it, but since the games stay consistently good nobody really cares.
User avatar #115 - kaoknight (05/22/2013) [-]
Pokemon fans look at COD and say how repetitive, non-changing and anti-innovative it is.

But COD fans say the same thing about pokemon.

basically, if you like a game that wont change since the first game you wont mind the next dozen of sequels that are exactly the same...

User avatar #118 - makotoitou (05/22/2013) [-]
I bring up my "games stay consistently good" argument. I may just be a raging opinion though, so feel free to ignore me.
User avatar #124 - kaoknight (05/22/2013) [-]
you can say "why fix what's not broken" and this shows that many of the fans hate change but there's nothing wrong with innovation and trying to add something new won't break the game.

Nintendo in general has the bad habit of never changing their formulas for any of their games just look at mario, zelda, kong etc
User avatar #126 - makotoitou (05/22/2013) [-]
And yet mario, zelda, and dk keep selling fantastically. Nintendo makes good formulas and keeps using them. No need to change them.
#154 - telfyr (05/22/2013) [-]
I personally hated the new DK country, I loved the old ones and LOVED DK 64
User avatar #129 - kaoknight (05/22/2013) [-]
they sell well because nintendo's game audience are either kids/casuals new to games or fans that will buy their games no matter what they sell.

"just because it makes more money means it's good" isn't a good argument. There are a lot of thing that sell well that are still complete crap. But obviously nintendo being a company cares more about profit than their fans enjoyment.
User avatar #136 - makotoitou (05/22/2013) [-]
But you're wrong. The fans don't want a change to the format and Nintendo caters to that by delivering quality product, even if it uses the same format.

Also companies want to make money, so how is it bad if Nintendo cares about making money?
User avatar #138 - kaoknight (05/22/2013) [-]
most of the fans don't want change yet many people who've been playing since gen1 complain that they want something different or new.

i didnt say there's anything wrong with a company making their first priority money I'm just pointing it out that nintendo doesnt care about fans.
User avatar #96 - itislethal (05/22/2013) [-]
The reason they do it though is because they wanted to force trainers to connect with others seeing as it was a new thing when the games first came out so no one really used it. This idea stuck because it was popular.
User avatar #99 - kaoknight (05/22/2013) [-]
well it's not that hard now since there's easy online trading network,

User avatar #85 - jrondeau (05/22/2013) [-]
Yeah, I only recently truly noticed this. I was always aware of the whole "different games, different pokemon" thing, but I never really cared and still mostly don't. Oddly, though, it only recently hit me that certain features are blatantly forcing you to get the other game (plus accessories in some cases) in order to get the best pokemon, such as Gengar, Alakazam, and various legendaries that are shoved in your face. Still don't really care much though as I'm too much of a diehard fan to ever really hate the series.
User avatar #93 - kaoknight (05/22/2013) [-]
yeah, I remember playing the earlier gens and gold and silver had both cover legendaries.

I always found the version exclusive pokemon thing annoying and just a blatant way to sell more copies to some people.

As for pokemon that only evolve by trading, some say that it's that way because pokemon is apparently a portable social game where people are suppose to share..but I just see it as annoying
User avatar #97 - jrondeau (05/22/2013) [-]
Sometimes I wish it was the way that it now is only in the 3rd game in each Gen wherein you can get all the legendaries (just like Gen I & II).

As for that and the evolve by trading thing though, I think we all know it's just a blatant marketing strategy now.
User avatar #107 - kaoknight (05/22/2013) [-]
i doubt they'll ever make a game with both legendaries again like silver/gold, now they found out that making legendaries exclusive to each game makes more money too.

I remember back then (before the wi-fi online play and trading network) I never had a link cable or knew that much people who played and being stuck with haunter and kadabra and other exclusives. I didnt even try completing the dex especially now since you pretty much need to transfer the pokemon from gba's and ds games
User avatar #111 - jrondeau (05/22/2013) [-]
I only ever completed the dex on Blue but then my dickbag neighbor deleted the save.

And yeah, they'll never allow all legendaries on the first-release games of any new generation now. Hell, you can't even fucking get them all on Black 2 or White 2. It kind of disgusts me that you can't get both Reshiram and Zekrom, but I did like the mixup of the story line a bit.
User avatar #133 - kaoknight (05/22/2013) [-]
after each gen they'd have "some" pokemon from previous gens that you can catch but now with gen after gen most pokemon are only going to be available by trade or transferring.

User avatar #142 - jrondeau (05/22/2013) [-]
Yeah, unfortunately :/ at least that global trading network thing provides a somewhat viable outlet for that though.
User avatar #149 - kaoknight (05/22/2013) [-]
yeah but it can be a little broken at times with the users who are asking for hacked pokemon like asking for a level 1 shiny giratina
User avatar #150 - jrondeau (05/22/2013) [-]
Or using obviously hacked pokemon as mere trading stock.
User avatar #153 - kaoknight (05/22/2013) [-]
and making a team full of obviously hack pokemon.

But either way I guess I'm not looking forward to X&Y and I hate all the hype advertising it's getting. I dont even have a 3ds and I'm one of those people that dont like buying consoles for a single exclusive game
User avatar #156 - jrondeau (05/22/2013) [-]
Ditto. I think this gen is the one in which I become an old nostalgiafag that yearns for the times of old.
User avatar #163 - kaoknight (05/22/2013) [-]
I agree I know some people that love pokemon and played it since gen 1 till now and are still awaiting gen 6 coming this fall. I mostly played pokemon in the the early 2000's and I stopped liking it after gen 4.

I know many people hated gen5 even though they still love pokemon, yet gen6 is getting all this hype because they finally have "3d" battles and other small "features" like moving diagonally and sitting on benches..
User avatar #164 - jrondeau (05/22/2013) [-]
Yeah...Gen IV lost me a bit because I thought it was so awful, but I really enjoyed gen V.

Gen VI looks too gimmicky and flashy for my tastes thus far though.
User avatar #166 - kaoknight (05/22/2013) [-]
i like the look of the 3d battle instead of 2s sprites (in gen 5 they turn them into moving gifs).

IMO, nintendo didnt need the 3ds to make a portable game with a 3d look, hell after watching the XY trailer I thought that dragon quest on the ds looked just as good

maybe it wouldnt seem like a gimmick if it didnt have this whole hype but nintendo does this on purpose since hype = advertising. They purposely give little reveal after reveal to cock tease the fans and the eat it all up
User avatar #171 - jrondeau (05/22/2013) [-]
True. I was a big fan of the graphics switchup in gen V, but I think that the new 3d stuff is going to be a bit too new and scary for my nostalgic tastes as it just seems overly gimmicky to me as the Wii was (and still is).

I dunno though, I just don't get that awesome childish feeling when I pick up a new pokemon game nowadays. You know, that one in which you get it the day it comes out and go "omigod, I can't believe there are more pokemon for me to catch! I can't wait to catch that crazy-looking legendary!" I think gen IV killed that for me, but maybe I'm just getting old now, been playing since gen I.
User avatar #174 - kaoknight (05/22/2013) [-]
I remember that nostalgic feeling of playing a new pokemon gen for the first time and liking he new pokemon and gym leaders but now I remember speed-playing through genV and I remember practically nothing from it. usually I'd remember most of the pokemon and I'd know the whole whole map by heart but not any more

I guess I only liked pokemon for nostalgic reasons..
User avatar #176 - jrondeau (05/22/2013) [-]
Yeah, I did mostly the same thing, except I more or less ruined the experience by just looking up the best pokemon before playing. Now I realize that the whole point is to find them on your own, but for some reason I just find that tedious now when I can simply look it up. I can still muster up some of that if I decide to restart an old gen I or III game nowadays, but it fades quickly unfortunately.

God I feel so old. Those games were my childhood man.
User avatar #220 - kaoknight (05/22/2013) [-]
in most games when you beat the elite four at level 50-60 and you rematch them later when they upgrade from level 70-80.

It would take probably three gens in a row to reach level 100 without level grinding.
but the point is that nintendo will never do multi-gens again, I'm surprised they did it for the gold/silver remakes
User avatar #213 - kaoknight (05/22/2013) [-]
they can try increasing the difficulty of the ai but in the end pokemon is a game that is made to be easy enough for kids to play but has a metagame that's hard to master
User avatar #215 - jrondeau (05/22/2013) [-]
This is true. Maybe they could just make the final region have gym leaders that consist of all level 100 teams. That would be nice were such a game to exist.
User avatar #201 - kaoknight (05/22/2013) [-]
a game with multiple gens is nice but I dont think there a real way they can maintain the difficulty level of each gen switch unless they tell you start all over.

with soulsilver after beating the elite 4 you had over power pokemon but the kanto region still had right leveled gym leaders..
User avatar #209 - jrondeau (05/22/2013) [-]
Yeah, but I don't think you can maintain that with the current XP system. My team was around level 60 I think after beating the Elite 4 in gen V, so I'm not sure how you could go through 4 more regions of increasing difficulty without getting all level 100's pretty quickly.
User avatar #189 - kaoknight (05/22/2013) [-]
They said that silver and gold were supposed to be the last pokemon games but they did so well that nintendo continued it. And I doubt that nintendo will ever make another pokemon game with multiple gens ever again..

ps. i'm commented on older comments since I cant reply on your other one
User avatar #198 - jrondeau (05/22/2013) [-]
Yeah, it's unfortunate.

I feel as though the only thing that could bring me that awesome feeling like back in the day would be a game with every single gen, though they would probably need to increase the level cap for that to happen, which would be weird.
User avatar #185 - kaoknight (05/22/2013) [-]
yeah, i liked gen 3 the most too out of all gens but I like silver/gold after because it was my first game and it also had gen1 in it
User avatar #186 - jrondeau (05/22/2013) [-]
Damn straight. The only reason that I haven't included them is because I've played through them so many damn times that the majesty of that fantastic generation is now mostly lost on me.

I did love HeartGold though.
User avatar #177 - kaoknight (05/22/2013) [-]
I usually dont mind spoilers but with the spoilers that got out before I could play gen 5 it kind of ruined the experience for me a bit.

After completing a game(beatng elite 4) I would explore the new areas but when i completed gen 5 i just didnt feel like playing anymore
User avatar #179 - jrondeau (05/22/2013) [-]
True, true. The story line just kinda feels so methodical now when you know that every game since gen III just ends with the bad Team trying to harness the legendary's power, then you swoop in, beat them, and catch it yourself. Then Elite 4, then new areas + roamers & ulltimate legendaries to catch. When you can basically guess when and how everything is going to go down it kinda kills your ambition.

Gen III will always be best gen though I think.

All soda containsfresh water. The reason the bottled water is more expensive is because they run it through a purifer, along with the fact that since less people in the usa aredrinking water they have to raise prices in order to make up for it.
