Yeah it is utter bullshit, I had the v1 games and never did I feel like killing myself. My guess is that the weather (I shit you not, weather affects mood) in those times is likely what caused all of those suicides. It happened in Mexico not too long ago, 300 suicides in one city because of one hailstorm that drove everybody apeshit.

The more you expect it the more likely that it will happen I guess.

Maybe it's more psychological, like if you're TRYING to hear it and you THINK it's going to affect you, it will.
You can end up manipulating yourself without even realizing. Sort of like the Placebo effect.
If you give someone a useless pill and tell them that it will cure their cold, after taking it, they'll end up feeling better, even though it's a useless pill. If someone's locked in a dark room and hear noises, they'll jump at every sound.
Same with this I guess. If you start a rumor that the suicides were because of a hidden frequency in the song, people might listen to it and complain of headaches, suicidal thoughts etc.
