Agnostics claim that they can not know. Atheist believe that there is no higher conscious being, most notably the ones pronounced in the religions found in the world. In fact, in some cases you can link Atheism with Agnosticism. Atheist's can claim not to know everything, even Hawking's stated: "One can't prove that God doesn't exist, but science makes God unnecessary." So sure we don't know, but with the way the world is, we don't need God as we have science, making his existence pointless to us.
