Sorry. I was kind of baked when I replied to that. I use a 0.9mm mechanical pencil, and rubbed it on scratch paper so the lead looks like /|. Then I just start shading on a scratch paper, and when the consistency is good (barely visible lines), then I remove the scratch paper and shade.
